We are buying a new house and we just found out the husband of the current owner had died in the master bedroom within the past year of natural causes.

would you continue with the sale?

I cant see it being a problem, unless of course you or the wife believe in ghosts.

An old man dies of natural causes? Not a deal breaker.

The police find 10 dead bodies under the concrete slab in the garage? Deal breaker.

If you found out someone died in a car crash at a certain intersection, would you drive around the block to avoid that intersection?

My mother died in the master bedroom at her house, because she didn't want to die in a hospital. I think my mother would make a pretty unthreatening ghost. If it bothers you, don't buy it. It does bother some people, which is why it has to be noted on the disclosure form (at least in my area).

I couldn't live there. It is all I would be thinking about.

There is a house a block away from me where the owner shot himself in one of the second floor bedrooms. People only stay in it for about 8 months then it goes up for sale again.

Its not automatically haunted if someone passes away there... I would most certainly purchase it.

Tell her I said she's bullšhit if you back out of the purchase.

I agree with you completely. We found out in the disclosure yesterday and my wife is balking now. I would rather die in my house as well. I think she is being unreasonable about this whole thing. I told her she needs to make a decision by tonight. I am not making it for her.

    Sunny, I will!

Call her and tell her yourself. I am at work now. You know the house number right?

Beside, we need to move. This will give you more room to detail the cars that you have not done in several months :)

Sucide is a whole different animal. I would not buy a house with such a tortured history. Natural causes is not a biggie to me.

Would you buy a house if there was a series of rapes in the master bedroom? Do you feel any worse if there was a crime committed somewhere in the house? Big difference between going when its your time, being shot behind the ear and other unnatural causes. I left my Ouija board at my last apartment so I can't help you on this one. ;)

Just for the sake of discussion, would it be different if someone fell off the roof and broke his neck, or fell down the stairs, or drowned in the pool, or choked on a sandwich, or........

Accidents and natural causes are ok in my book. Doing a Kurt Cobain is a soul that is troubled. That leaves bad mojo in the house.

For me it wouldn't change anything. If I knew there was a death at all I wouldn't be able to live there.

Yeah, and as long as their good ghosts its all good. I lived in an apt one time were the vacancy was created because the former roomate hung himself. It was in the OTHER room though....Never saw a thing..

As long as one person died in there, it's fine to me. My friend's neighbors died a few months (maybe a year) ago. I think a family of 5 or 6 were in the house and all died because of Carbon Monoxide poisoning from the car running in the garage. The grandma was on vacation at the time and came back, but it was already discovered that they were all dead. I think she lived in there for a couple months, but there's a new family there. I'll try to find the property tax info to see how much more or less it sold for.

Edit: Bought for $161,000 in '02 and sold for $217,000 in Jan '05. I wouldn't buy that house if it was me. An entire family line just died right then and there at the same time :(

I would have to get a deal on it, if you were to sell it, you would have to inform the buyers and then they would want the deal too.

I believe the disclosure is a limit of 5 years in California.

I need to have Art look into it but I am fairly sure that it's a 5 year limit.

Are the realtors giving you a better deal on the house because someone passed away in it?? Also, if you decide to purchase...dont watch any Amityville movies with the wife.

Interesting twist - if you had a less high profile case involving grotesque murder or suicide, and the owner bulldozed the house and built a new one - is the disclisure requirement still in play?

Or if it happened in a tool shed, and the tool shed was torn down, but the main structure remained in tact - is the disclosure requirement still in play?
