I've had two F355s that I purchased with mileage either in the low 20' or high teens. Each one had a few minor issues to sort out, I'm thinking mainly due to having not been driven enough. My most reliable Ferrari has been a '98 550 Maranello that I bought with over 50,000 miles on it. It ran like a champ and had practically nothing wrong with it in comparison to the F355s.

So I'm thinking along the lines that an F355 with almost 60,000 miles could be in better running condition than one that has way fewer miles. I of course intend to do my due diligence on this car... having it inspected, etc., but here's the car in question:

    1996 Ferrari F355, $39,995 - Cars.com

The price is pretty good I think. The CarFax is clean. In talking with them yesterday, they said they'd get the service records for me from Abacus Racing ( Abacus Racing | Virginia Beach and Norfolk Machine Shop, Exotic Car Repair Shop, and Dyno Services located in Hampton Roads ) which is also in VA Beach, so I'm waiting to hear from them sometime today.

Let me know your thoughts on an F355 with "high mileage" (not really considering the age).

    Thanks!

I would buy one with high milage and for a good price but never from a dealer. Just imagine how much they paid and why? Was the owner fed up? You don't have to chance to interrogate them and find out. A dealer will just lie and tell you what you want to hear. As far as a PPI....well that's only slightly better than asking any random person to check out the car. Plenty of people suck at their job, including the PPI guy. I trust no one except me. And that's my 2 cents.

Look at it this way...it's made it to 60,000 miles. I'd be more worried about a car with only 10,000 miles on it.

I have stripped and rebuilt a 355 engine with way more miles than that (80-90). The internals of the engine from main bearings, pistons, oil pump to cylinder bores were in fantastic shape and in theory did not need rebuilding or replacing at all. This evedence in its self convinced me that these 355 engines are fantastic in terms of wear and durability, and high milages in these engines are not of any concern.
However it does not really matter in these rare occasions some one like my self gives clear evedence First hand of what these engines look like internally, its quickly forgotten or ignored, and more threads about "high milage" cars are started.
From what i know, DON'T buy a 355 based on engine milage, buy it on condition of the whole car.

    I like this.

The last one I had now belongs to 355Rocks. It was getting close to 40k on her when I traded and it ran great (until the fuel pump went on him the day he bought it, but no biggie).. I'm missing the F355 badly, as for some reason it's the Ferrari I keep coming back to after having owned a few different models. I don't know what it is about the F355 I love so much.

So now, I have that car-fever again... craving another car for no good reason other than I want something. The choices are:

    F355
    e60 M5
    e92 M3
    IS-F
    Porsche CS4
    C6 Vette Z06

Yes, I know. These are all over the range. I get that. I've had all of the above except the Porsche and the Vette. I loved them all EXCEPT for the F355 Spider I had. That's the ONLY F355 I've disliked! I'm worried a little about the Porsche, as I'm reading too many reports of engine failures. Could just be another example of TMI on the web, just like all the bad talk and horror stories about F355s and as you mentioned about your reports eventually being ignored. I'm also reading bad reports about bearing/engine failures on the e92 M3s, though I had one and don't THINK that my engine was developing an issue.

If the PPI comes back good on this F355, I don't think I mind it having so many miles.... may actually prefer it. I've become somewhat seasoned in what-to-look-for with these cars, so I'm going to take a look at it myself this Saturday, but I'm still going to need Abacus to do some PPI... like compression testing.

I just sold a 355 with 39K miles. "High" mileage for a Ferrari, according to common belief.

Frankly, it was the best 355 that I've ever driven, and I've driven a lot as a dealer specializing in these cars. Put a few hundred miles on it (kept it as my own for a while), and it was just solid as a rock.

I would much rather buy a sorted high mileage car than a low mileage car with questionable or no history.

Rather have high mileage than a low. Less issues with high mileage cars. Also, price is good.

My 355 has 50k on it and it runs way better than when I got it at 25k, after doing a bunch of work to it over the years.

My 996 C4 blew an engine about 6 months ago. New motor from Porsche was not cheap.

    Get it and keep it!

Whoa! So now I "know" someone with a blown 996. Scratching from the list for certain.

I'm feeling good about this car. If it renders me comfortable after seeing it in person on Saturday, I'm sure I'll pull the trigger as long as compression tests are good. And despite what service records say about the car, I'll take it straight to Karl Troy at European Road and Racing to have the major done and the headers replaced (if currently stock).... just so that I feel even better!

The high mileage/low mileage debate is an old one, so search the threads...

But, IMHO, Ferraris need to be driven. Period. And in my experience, they perform better with regular use. I'm not suggesting you flog the thing mercilessly but you'll do more harm neglecting a Ferrari for months on end than by driving it 2-3x a week.

It's not lost on me that the Ferrari emblem is a thoroughbred horse. Like any horse, you cannot leave it neglected in the stable for weeks and then show up once in a while and want to flog her around the nearby trails. Try doing that with a real horse. It'll be ticked off with you, it'll be out of shape from languishing in the stable without human contact, and it will probably toss you around because it's not happy with you.

You need to pay attention to a thoroughbred horse. Feed it, wash it, bond with it, give it regular exercise, and you will be rewarded. Ferraris are no different.

    Would you buy a '95 GTB 6v with 125.000m/200.000km for 50k USdollar/35500 euro?
Already posted the advertisement in a former post, but think it's a little overprized...
What you think about that? It's for sale in Europe.

For $40k as long as the PPI comes back good there really is no downside risk "value" wise. A good running well maintained F355 will always be worth $40k no matter what the odometer says.

My F355 has 42k miles and I plan on adding to it every chance I get with no regrets.

..because compared to my F355 GTS it just didn't ride and handle as well. I could feel body twist with the top up, but especially when the top was down. And even with the top up, there was that reverberation through the roof and steering column when hitting bumps or railroad tracks.

She sounded better with the top down, though :) But then the GTS sounded just as well with the top out.

I bought a low mileage, freshly serviced, full known history car from an authorized dealer, and it was still like setting up direct deposit from my bank account to my mechanic's account. Whether it has 5k miles or 50k miles, it's going to cost a bundle to keep running properly, so in my opinion the best bet is to spend as little as possible up front, hence a higher mileage car. No point in spending top dollar for a low mileage car only to get hit with the same ridiculous repair bills as one that cost half as much.

Then again for the OP, Porsche fixed the IMS issues with the 2009+ 911s ;)

    I'd buy a 355 with 50k miles and a few owners.

I'd probably pass on a <20k mile car with 7-8 owners...

Hmmm...I went and looked at the service records for this car the other day.

Overall, a few things will need to be addressed (like stickies), but it looks pretty solid for the money. Seller also mentioned it will need a little suspension work. He seems like a pretty straight up guy, and I know the dealership sells a lot of european sports cars and has repeat customers. Story is that it has been local for three years, owned by a Navy officer who is relocating.

Abacus is top notch, as is LMN Motorsports. LMN did my major, and Lutzo is vey knowledgeable. I'd definitely recommend him for a PPI.

If it is the one in Norfolk that I saw frequently, you could do much worse, it was a nice car and the owner drove it a bit... It was what prompted me to buy my 355.

He told me the same thing yesterday, as well as gave me more maintenance history from Abacus. When you say you "went and looked at the service records", you mean you went to Abacus or the dealer that has it?

I'm pretty much sold on the car at this point, I just want to get up there on Saturday to look it over myself for the little things I've had issues with in the past.... just so that I'll know what to expect. Also, At over 50,000 miles, I'm sure the headers are dead if they're still stock. No worries, though. I intend to take it straight to Karl Troy for the engine-out service regardless of records. We'll sort everything thing then!

    Thanks!
