Hi Guys, Im back into Ferrari ownership again and had a question.

I am planning on getting my car to Karl to do a major but was trying to figure if I should put it on a flat bed to deliver or drive it there. Of course I am leaning towards driving it because they are so dang fun to drive and I have no sense or patience. Its about a 15min drive with some freeway. The only driving I have done with it is from the transport truck to my garage...about 1000ft.

The Car is a very nice 1985QV with "showing" 14,500 miles on the OD. The guy I bought it from said that it had major service with belts 1k miles ago but it has been sitting in a garage for about 6 years with little driving. All the research I have done prior to purchasing this beauty leeds me to believe the odometer could possibly be correct and the condition I have seen personally supports that but who knows? I do not have the documentation of the major.....its lost somewhere.

I put it up on my lift and looked closely at everything I could and found nothing that would alarm me. Does not leak anything, all fluids look good, starts right up, sounds right and drives perfectly. I am not an expert though dabbling on this forum has made me feel like one at times :)

    would you drive it?

If you tossed me the keys I would definately drive your car to your shop of choice. I could not however be responsible for anything that might go wrong :D

personally i'd drive it if it's only 15 minutes, but thats me. Sounds like the PO doesn't have paper to back up the claim of a major only 1K miles ago? If I had that paper I wouldn't go full major again now, all I would be concerned about would be updating belts, tensioners and accessory belts.

Drive it. When I got my car it had been sitting for about 12 years. I took a close look at the belts after it was unloaded and in my garage. They there was no evidence of cracking or fraying.

I drove it a few times before performing any work with no issues.

It sounds like you got a great car. Enjoy and post some pics.

I wouldn't drive it why? Because it's been sitting for 6 years. Imagine, Ferrari recommend the belt change every 3 years and that's considering driving the the car regularly. What more sitting around for 6 years or maybe more. Also The PO said it had major service 1K mile ago. Do you have proof? Plus it's not just how many miles ago but also how long ago, time is your key here. Now, is it realy worth the risk?

You have such a fine beautiful piece of art on your possesion, to me, it's not worht the risk.

I thin'k I'd play it safe and tow it. If you had paperwork to prove the major, I'd probably drive it.

    Last oil change?

If it really has sat for 6 years, then it's due for timing belts, but also all fluids, brake flush, coolant hoses, fuel hoses, etc. I would suggest a flat bed ride would be least damaging, I wouldn't drive my car around on 6 year old oil.

    1) find out the shop that did this service 6 yrs ago and call them
    2) call CAA spend $100 and get the membership
    3) if you can't validate the service, or can't validate the shop...assume he did SQUAT!
    4) call CAA and have them tow it to your shop of choice.

If you drive it, and all those hoses are 30 yrs old and original, and the gas is 6 yrs old in the tank and the car has a major issue, don't post it here...I don't want to hear it.

A 15 minute drive is enough for the car to get hot and make it a bad experience along the way.

Having the belts idle for six years makes them more susceptible to breaking than if it is used - flatbed. Highly likely you are ok driving but if you are not? Clearly you have concern or you would not ask.

No just kidding. Have it flatbedded.
When i bought my QV it took it out of the car trailer straight onto the lift so i could change the 20 year old timing belts. Yikes  Have Fun

Everything rubber on the car needs inspecting. Hoses, fuel lines, bushings etc.

Once you make it safe drive the heck out of it.

Thanks for all the input! I did put it up on the lift and all the hoses I can get to look and feel great! The tank was empty and I put about 5 gal into it. Fluids look great! My main concern is the timing belts. With everything looking in such good shape is the only reason why I was asking really. I know these cars are stronger and more hardy than some make them out to be so I wanted to get your opinions. Thanks again for the input!

Sit in driver seat and honk horn periodically on top of flatbed on way to shop. Also make rev noises and pretend to shift. So simple guys. Duhhhr.

Simple, just ask yourself this. What do you got to loose if you drive the car vs, What do you got to loose if you don't drive it?

Given the fact that you are asking, you probably already know the answer. It's sort of like that old Fram filter commercial from many years ago, You can pay me now or pay me later. I wouldn't risk it especially with so much to lose and absolutely nothing to gain.

Those hoses may look fine on the outside but be rotting out linings.
    Don't risk it.

The issue is "have they ever been changed ?" Most neglect this and that's why you here from time to time a 308 burns. The material used never was designed for the ethanol in the fuel or to last 25-30 years. IMHO the best thing u can do is spring for the SRI hose kit. You will sleep better at night. Plenty of threads here on the topic.
