    It depends on several things.

First, you have to like the TR, which I presume you do. It's a very in-yer-face kind of car that attracts a lot of attention, which never stops. Some people like it for a few weeks and then get very annoyed. My friend has a Diablo and the crowds around his car (wherever he goes!) would personally drive me nuts.

Second, how do you you use your Porsche? It would be ill-advised and impractical to use the TR as a daily driver.

Thirdly, how is your expectation level? I know you're not expecting GT2 performance, but I'm thinking specifically about things like ergonomics and reliability - two areas where cars have advanced from the Stone Age to the Rocket Age in the last 20 years. And this TR is first Italian, and second 15 years old.

Fourth, you have to realise buying now might cost you a bit more than buying in 6 months' time.

Now if you're happy about all that, then I would certainly say: GO FOR IT! Ferraris do have something very special, and TRs are unlikely to depreciate if you're talking a 5 year window. The TR is an amazing statement-mobile, and they sound great. Performance is still alright, just as long as you're not expecting huge cornering speeds. Besides, you HAVE to have owned a Ferrari in your lifetime, surely? :)

Go FOR it! 512 TR was one of the best ferrari in my opinion and it also its my favorite. but frankly i don't know about servicing , cost, etc. but i really like it. so how's the condition? is it good?

i myself will choose this instead gt2(997 exception) without think twice.

That's a cracking 512TR i'd say go for it, just dont expect it to go round corners like your GT2!

nice Gt2. how about some more pics of it?

No way I would trade a GT2 for a 512TR... Have you driven one yet? definitely not a toss it around the corners sports car.

For me, If i wanted to trade for a F-car, Id opt for a 575... just me

That dealer gets some nice cars and you have a good eye. That looks very attractive. The TR would be my pick of the line also.

The choice is yours but surely you should have a Ferrari at some time. And that is a nice one.

    Dear Ferraristi,

First of all.....Welcome to the board !

As a longtime TR owner (91 Testarossa ), I say go for it! The porsche is very reliable fast car....but it's just a fast car.....not an exotic. You can say the same for a vette....just a fast car. A Ferrari really is something special.....just the way it feels. It won't feel like a luxury car and you really feel connected to the car and to the road.

The Testarossa is the most outrageous, over-the-top Ferrari made. After driving the Porsche, you will be amazed how many people will come up to you and ask you about the car while filling up. I also drive a Lamborghini so I get twice as much attention driving that car compared to the TR. You have to be patient and accommodating to the questions and camera phones. It that really bothers you.....a F car may not be a good choice for you. I believe these cars are works of art and are meant to be shared. Oh yeah, always let the tall thin blonde take a seat in the car.....can't hurt your social life. :)

Because these cars are low volume, you will find the parts and servicing costs outrageous compared to you Pcar....it's worth it....like dating a supermodel....she'll spend all your money but the sex and "trophy factor" is worth it.

Despite what many say, I drive my TR and VT Roadster as daily drivers in all weather everyday. ( I don't own any other cars ) .....great daily driver.

With the times the way they are, call MCI directly and offer them less....it can't hurt. ( if you're buying outright)

    Good Luck !

    That GT2 is very nice

The 512Tr is a beauty but its not the racer that the GT2 is, that would be an F40 but its a lot more $$

Had a ruf upgraded (520hp) 996 turbo before the 512M. Even my wife always tells me that even the M is does not feel as fierce when accelerating to 200km/h +. But then again I knew what I was expecting from a 20 yr old design. Always liked the look of the TR and in my country there's only 4 available. Maybe someday I may get a 996 turbo/GT2 again, but NOTHING that can replace that TR. To me the porsche only thrills when driven on the track or high speed (was meant to be a GT) which is good. But the F car excites you even if you are going for a short drive thru the city and it will drain your energy everytime you drive it. When you are bored, you can always walk around it and admire the timeless, ground breaking design.

The TR is not a sports car. There just isn't ANY comparison to a GT2. Apples to Oranges.

It was designed as an open road GT car to take two people and luggage from A to B FAST in relative comfort.
It's big and heavy! 3660 dry, 4020 gross (Two tons!!)

Comparing technologies between the two, the TR is a dinosaur, but that can also be a good thing if you are trying to avoid the complexity and IDIOT-SYNCHROSIES of the newer models.

As long as you understand WHAT the TR was designed for, HOW it should be used, understand it shortcomings and not make the mistake of comparing the design and style to Ferraris of the mid/late 90's then I think you would be happy with it.

You'll get more attention in your "old" TR than you will the GT2. My experiences have been positive, even the little kids know what it is and love it.

The 12 cylinder with after market exhaust (mine is Capristo level 2) is ADDICTIVE.

Acceleration is like an electric motor. 80 mph to 130 is especially fun. That's when the car STARTS to do what it was designed to do.

For me, the 512 TR is the best of the bunch but I'm still quite happy with my "plain old TR", at least for now..

Another 100 HP would make it perfect (with a 512M gearbox)

Here you go. I just bought those rims (magnesium). I rarely drive the 2. She just clocked 15,000 miles and she is an '02 (garage queen), so the 512 would get the same treatment. Thanks for all of the advice and comments. I may fly out to Motorcars International this week and take a look at her. I might just keep the 2 and step up and buy the 512. I need to get a lift for the garage.

Usually not a fan of red 911's or black rims, but the look on your gt2 is fantastic. black interior i presume?

if you want to replace your gt2 with an fcar, the best option would be a 430 scuderia imho.

Interior picture. I since replaced the center console with one that is painted 'guards red' to match the exterior paint. You're probably right, if I wanted to replace the 2 with an F car, the Scuderia would be a great choice. I'm going to look into getting a lift and then make arrangements to see the 512. I think I might regret trading or selling the 2, especially after some of the upgrades I've done (Europipe exhaust, Flashed ECU, Race clutch, LWFW, etc, etc). Thanks again for all of your comments and advice and very nice welcome by all.

Exactly!! I have a P car and an F car and they are two different things. You can't trade one for the other. Although I would probably trade the gt2 for something more mundane like a carrera 4S for those rainy days when i still want some fun!

I think Norwood had a turbo setup for the TR ... I heard some crazy hp numbers should you miss being able to light the tires at 100 mph :).

    I don't think I could handle a GT2 ... holy cow ... serious car.

The fastest I've ever gone on the ground was when I got to drive a 96 996. After the 10 hr drive, I was quite impressed with the rocket acceleration, But; I wouldn't trade it for any Ferrari. My reasons - sound, feel, character, looks, interior layout on and on. Reliability hasn't been a huge problem for me with Italian cars. My Volvo was way more trouble than any Ferrari has been to me. IMHO.

    Good luck!

They are both such different animals. I would have to do both. The GT2 for the corners, the F-car for the sound and the flash factor (after a set of hyperflow race pipes and an X-ost muffler)

    Very nice.

I guess it comes down whether you are bored with the GT2... if so time to move on. The only fcars similar o the GT2 level are the F40 :)D), F50, enzo, scuderia, the 599.

nothing much more exotic than a TR (and def pay the premium for a 512TR over a Testarossa), so as long as that's what your looking for you won't go wrong.
