I skimmed this article saying that in Louisiana they're considering making low-slung pants exposing midriffs and underwear in public an indecent act punishable by a moderate fine. http://www.adn.com/24hour/weird/story/1367238p-8587791c.html

My first reaction was it's a bit much to try and control that. Then I got to thinking about my [future] daughters - and there's no way I'd let them wear clothes like that around. There's the whole cheap/easy image that goes with it... as guys, we like to catch a glimpse of it, but admittedly the woman becomes less respectable in many social measures. And frankly, I've seen many pudgy bellies exposed that just shouldn't be.

So, all things considered - how would you vote?

NOTE: I realized I switched the options around, please answer according to the choice description

A step in a good direction, may even curb some problems. I don't care about the clothes people ware, but I do not want to see a guys ass hanging out of his pants as I follow him.

Great, the slide back to the Victorian era has begun.

I vot for covering the midriff as long as hotties must expose the booty & the jumblies :)

By the time they get their act together enough to put the law in place (which will most likely never stand up anyway) the fashion will have changed to maxi skirts or culottes with turtlenecks or something.

Louisiana, of all places - okay to get your t!ts out for plastic beads at Mardi Gras, but heaven forbid your belly should show.

If they are going to step up and legislate this, inevitably there will be some sort of quantification of what is and isn't acceptable (recall the "inches above the knee" measures in the '60s/early '70s for example), and since this is bloody stupid anyway why not create some sort of "overlap" measure that bans just the disgusting displays rather than all of them - like some sort of circumference differential between waistband of jeans and the fattest part of the belly that cannot exceed "x" .

The whole thing is effing stupid...

BTW thanks for asking - and let me tell you what I REALLY think...

Edit - having now read the article, I'd like to see the waistband on the pants that "intentionally exposes ...cleft of the ... genitals." That has got to be one low mo fo.

    Cheers
    Kevin

...and that's cool, but as long as folks are adequately dressed, they shouldn't be given fines or told how to dress or have to dress more conservatively because other people can't control themselves or are unbearable prudes... Women are allowed to roam NYC topless; wtf is going on in Louisiana...? Dude, when we were down in New Orleans, you could've started campaigning this sort of republican idiocy THEN...! :D

Hey, Atlas... A full-figured woman has every right to wear what any other woman wears; whether someone ELSE likes it or not is not her problem...

Lastly, if a woman "becomes less respectable in many social measures" merely due to how she dresses, well, then those "social measures" are undeserving of her company... Maybe one day, we as a society, will stop judging people by how they look or what they wear or what music they like or what car they drive and we'll all get along much better...

Although it's not exactly the same issue you brought up, I just wanted to note although this is a 'conservative prude' type issue it was a Dem who presented it, and it was the Republican who was saying it wouldn't work. This is an issue that is not a party politic issue.

I agree that we shouldn't judge by physical features or body shape (y'all know that I need that defense!), however, I would argue that hygiene and personal presentation are openly judgeable... in the way that it allows us to initally discern someone's character. That's the way we function socially. This is not a rich/poor judgement either, as you can be broke and dress cleanly from WalMart, or be rich and dress scraggly and dissheveled at Abercrombie & Fitch.

Trust me, it's not the society that is bad when we deem that a women is less respectable when you can see her midriff. It's the girls choice that she wanted to dress like that.

The ones who do expose their midriff and wear low-ryders are the girls we generally avoid in high-school.

As much as I cant help but to admit I like looking at some of these half naked girls at school, its just not right :( Id love to go back to the days when people dressed respectably...When people didn't dress up in their finest tank tops to get on an airplane or go to Disneyland; when the popular and proper thing to do was be well dressed, intelligent, and courteous.

So...I can get over the pain...Its all for the better :)

Ban low riders that expose midriffs or underwear?

    Hell No!

    Then you have to ban:

    1. tank tops on women that expose a little bra here and there
    2. baggy pants that rappers like to wear where their boxers are hanging out.
    3. miniskirts because they show too much leg and crotch (well there is NEVER too much leg and crotch exposed!)

Don't think u will be able to enforce these, esp #1.

If left to the population, there is no way the public will ban exposed midriffs.

50% of the population is women, they want to maintain the right to express themselves and embrace women's liberation.

50% of the population is men, they want to see women wearing tiny clothes.
