I just found out today that one of my life long friends Fred is in the hospital with terminal cancer. We lost track of each other about 2yr's ago and one of our close friends called me and informed me of his battle. His family has a history of cancer but he is adopted so I doubt there is any correlation. Fred and I used to party HARD back in the '80's and those are very cherished memory's for us both, atleast the ones we can remember.

I will see him tomorrow and hopefully I do not get overly emotional.

Thanks Bo but all is well, knock on wood, as it was just a rumor his ex-wife was spreading around. I spent a few hours with him and he politely asked me not to make him laugh because it hurt so much but his spirits are high. He has some sort of gastrointestinal malfunction and has a "tube" but at least he is not....

I could not resist, because of our history, asking him if I could borrow his morphine IV and how hot his nurses are, good times. He will be there at least another 2 weeks but when he comes home I told him I will be there for him.

    Thanks "Flirty Larry" !! :D

Fred has always been a true and cherished friend and I think having someone there for him will help in his recovery. I would add a story about him and I but I cannot remember any, we survived the '80s together - nuff said.

In such moments we must be humble, respect our fellow man and we should thank God that we have our health and we have the power of doing things. I've lost my uncle last summer from pancreatic cancer. Difficult times for family and friends. I'm so sorry for your friend Gregg, and i wish to be as painless as it can be.

There are no words for such a moments....

Thank you and you are right in that words are difficult to find or express. He is stronger than I am and he told me "Stop crying you big sissy!". We have both had a alot of personal loss over the past 5yr's and I am just happy that I get the chance to return some of the kindness he has given me through the years.

I wonder if going through this type of thing (at least until the very end) is actually more difficult for the friends and family than for the actual patient.

Not to say it is easy for anyone involved, but for the terminal patient the end resolution is a given. For everyone else there is the current sdaness of watching them decline and possibly suffer, but also the anticipatory grief of knowing they wil have to go on at some point without them.

Always sorry to hear about things like this. Good luck to everyone involved in this difficult situation.

I haven't read this book but listened to an hour interview of the author, it seems like a good resource.

As you probably already know we lost Myra and Maurice this past year and they worried more about everyone else. Thankfully my friend is not on the same path, not battling cancer, and has a great chance of making a full recovery.

    Thank you. ;)
