Talledaga: Edwards is winning but tries to block and gets flipped into Newman's windshield and into the catch fence. Edwards gets out of his burning car and runs accross the finish line (it counts). Preliminary report says some fans were injured, hopefully not seriously. The fence held well considering the car was probably still doing 150 at impact.

phenominal ending! Edwards is a true sportsman , wanting to finish even though his car could not.....amazing he could walk away after the flight he took!

Very very impressive finish.. If that car was any higher and there would have been a good chance that it would have ended up in the stands.

This is where restrictor plate racing came from. Donnie Allison into the stands at a 220 mph lap in what, 1989? You can't put cars into the stands. That year they were running as fast at Talladega as they were at Indy. Now I'm watching the Indy at Kansas and they could touch wheels and launch one into the fence just as easy. I hope everyone is OK.

I don't know what the answer is because I like to be as close as possible at every race I go to. I have hearing loss to prove it.

as Carl said at the end of the race, "we'll keep racing like this until we kill somebody, then NASCAR will make a change".

    sad but true.

apparently 8 people were taken to the hospital and the worst mentioned was broken bone - you know who those youtube videos can be...

we actually watched most of the race...

lots of action in racing this weekend - VIR and the Brumos hitting the Ganassi car which in turn hits Max Mad - boy was Scott upset after the race; the motorcycle race in Japan - many ouches; the fight with Pat Long and whoever else that was on of all things I think it was Pinks; this big wreck (one of many there today)

Kudos to Carl for taking full blame and absolving Brad of any fault. Talladega has had a history of unexpected winners and this time was no different. Consider a top five that included Newman, Ambrose and Speed!

WOW! I missed the race and saw this on the news. Someone by that fence maker a beer! Made my heart skip a beat. One reason to be high in the stands.

Thank God that car did not go over the fence and the fence held, other wise there would have been mutiple deaths for sure - that is the worst accident I have seen since the Bodine crash in a truck at Daytona in 2000 (I think). At that crash, they stopped the race for over 2 hours and several people caught parts of the car in the stands

I was at that race (Bodine) and was sitting in the upper stands directly above where he hit the fence. I still remember feeling the intense heat from the fireball.

It was fan safety that lead to restictor plates to begin with. Earnhart, sr. suggested putting the fans in the infield and let the cars run. Today's unrestricted cars can run 240-250. Another suggested removing the banking which would cut speeds a lot. One thing is for sure, NASCAR obvioulsy takes safety really seriously. The cars can take tremendous crashes and drivers walk away (or run accross finish lines like Edwards). Likewise, the safer barriers and fences are obviously well designed.

Lets not forget the Nationwide race on Sat,Matt took 8 barrell rolls and walked away. The seat never moved, everything held as supposed to although some cage bars bent and of course sheetmetal deformed.Nascar officals were at the shop yesterday to look over car and said everything performed as it should have.A credit to Nascar safety rules and a safety concious, quality construction team.Car now museum piece.Like it or not Talladega is always exciting. Will post pics later, still on camera.
