    Texas!
All of you were so helpful in answering my last post about a laptop that I thought I would try again in getting some feedback on writing tablets.

Here's the deal -- My daughter will start law school this Fall, and the school requires students to have a laptop for exams. Plus, they encourage it for note taking. However, my daughter feels that writing notes triggers more memory retention than banging on a keyboard. So what about those electronic tablets that "learn" your handwriting and convert it to text? Do any of you have any experience with this? Is this tech too early to be really useful? Can you recommend any specific machines?

    TIA Dale

I agree on writing = memory retention.

Regarding the tablets - little experience, and it has been a few years. I used them with whiteboard notetaking in meetings. Perhaps there is a piece of software that will work on a tablet pc? Looking up a few searches - here is a good thread to start with: http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?t=9228 Looks like MS One Note (which I've used - and can be very resourceful) or others work too.

Honestly, for exam taking and note taking, she's going to take 3 exams probably, and notes everyday. I would rather write my notes than waste my money on a tablet. I would like a tablet, because I write sloppy when I write extremely fast, and I like to draw, even if it sucks. I took my laptop twice to class, and never paid attention to the lesson. The majority of kids that took their laptops didn't pay attention.

I would just get a normal LIGHTWEIGHT laptop. Lightweight, because it can get heavy, with books, and everything else. Mine was 6.5~ pounds, and it wasn't too bad until I took more books.

If your still looking for a tablet check out the HP tablet. I played with one Tuesday, and I found it pretty nice. Make sure you don't go with something crazy expensive as laptops get stolen easily, and the wear and tear will happen a little faster.

Tablet PC's have been around for a while now, and we've been playing around with them at work. Microsoft OneNote (a component of Office) is software that allows you to take freehand notes, either by handwriting or using the keyboard. I've started taking notes in meetings almost exclusively via keyboard (my work laptop isn't a tablet) and find that my retention isn't any different. The Tablets are nice but can be pricey for a good one. OneNote is very flexible but you really have to spend the time to learn the software, there is so much you can do with it. Tablet PC's have been around for 5 years, OneNote has been around for the same and has been refined and the technology works well. Dell just released their tablet PC (the Latitude XT) and it's pretty nice, very nice form factor and they seem solid. One some of the cheaper convertible tablets the hinge that allows you to flip the screen around can seem very cheap, it was not on the Dell demo we had. OneNote also allows you do do things like record a meeting or lecture, while taking notes at the same time. Don't know if that would be valuable for your daughter but it might be.

Truthfully, I stopped using OneNote and started using Evernote (www.evernote.com), OneNote is really optimized for the tablets. Evernote has a nice Windows client, syncs to the web and allows me to get my notes anywhere. OneNote will do this as well but does not have the web client, so you have to have OneNote installed on to view your notes. I found OneNote was actually too much for my needs, but if I were going to lectures and taking more notes than I do these days, I would probably want the extra features, especially if I had a tablet.

Cut and paste from a notebook only works once. And putting any part of it on the web squashes the spider.

    Try the Lightscribe Pulse SmartPen.

They sell a 150 dollar pen that will "record" what you write on micro-dotted paper and at the same time record audio. All the data can be transferred to your computer. It comes with software that lets you search for keywords in your notes. I just picked one up at Target and I am seriously impressed.

It's not a bad device. Logitech has a similar product.

OneNote and Evernote are far more capable, as is a tablet PC, obviously.

Please keep in mind that the top law schools are trying to prepare their student for life beyond a crackberry. How we think, and how we interact with technology are going to be critical issues as we all go further up the road.

No joke, technology is everywhere now. Cars are getting even more advanced, that it takes a while to teach my mom how to use a new phone or show her something she didn't know about her car (hold the lock button and windows will close)
Honestly, I love all the new gadgets and gizmos, It's so fascinating what people will come up with next.
