Anyone know where I can find one here in the US? I'm looking for anything from a complete project car to a fully restored one.

Looking through old magazines, it's amazing how many Mangustas were for sale when they were only a year or two old. A typical Autoweek in 1970 would usually have 4 or 5 of them listed. That doesn't speak well for the car, buy it, drive it, dump it.

    I'd love to have one.

I believe 150 of the original 401 still exist. The styling is something to behold considering the age of the car. The body shape is strikingly similar to the BORA IMO. I owned a '73 euro model BORA (no bulky US bumpers)and regret not taking pics of them side by side. Mine is for sale-passively...

That is a great observation and on the mark. DeTomaso was handed a bunch of nice cars, but couldn't figure out how to make them handle or work well. On the sport 5000 he couldn't read a blueprint and built the seats so close to the steering wheel you couldn't get in it! Shelby and Pete Brock left him the P70 and spec'd most of the design. He adopts the Mangusta from Ghia but can't get it to handle Ford bails him out on the Pantera and then he comes up with the idea to build the Maserati Biturbo................. Right place....right time ......wrong guy.

Two went through this site last winter. A red one and a yellow one previously owned by Dean Jefferies. Both a bit rough, both in the 60k plus range asking. Both 4 headlight cars.

I was thinking about them last year. Slightly more room inside than a Pantera but still not enough room for my legs......plus the bad handling aspect nixed the idea.

Interesting perspective. I don't believe any of the cars DeTomaso made were "handed" him. DeTomaso actually owned Ghia, He and Shelby were no big buddies as the Mangusta-Italian for Mongoose, was made specifically to woe Ford away from Shelby. i.e. cobra killer. The Pantera styling out Lamborghini'd Lamborghini and by the time it was in production, his thoughts were elsewhere. I'll give you this. He never saw projects through well-once one was accepted he changed gears and was on to another w/o worrying about the details to make a finished product.

Your opinion of course. I don't know that he was "handed" anything. They were extremely low production, Italian cars, built in the 60's, from a small company. The Mangusta was a much bigger hit than expected, and was really never designed as a major production. Expecting excellent build quality would not have been realistic.

And yet this "wrong guy" is the one who saved Maserati. Turned them around from being completely worthless, into a profitable company, and sold them to Fiat later for tens of millions.

Please, while not what some people would call thoroughbreds the Panteras would bloody any car from its contemporaries Every bit as exotic and much much more fun to drive. Truly brutal, truly awesome machines.
