Hi. New to Ferrari and making the move up from a 71 Corvette. I live in NJ. Looking for a 328 GTS, preferably not red, very good to excellent condition, ok if the major service needs to be done but that should be factored into the price.

email any offers to: [email protected].

    Thanks!
    Dan

It took me a while to find mine, because I also didn't want red. Plain black sometimes comes up. There are also some resale-proof colors that you might not want.

Make a call to Motorcars Int'l in Springfield MO, and the place where I bought mine, Sport Auto in Summerfield NC. They seem to handle a good number of 328s. Tell them what you're looking for.

Marshall Goldman in Cleveland had a black/black last year, and a nice but kind of love-it-or-hate-it rosso metallic (almost like pale lipstick red with metallic flake). I haven't bought from Marshall, but he tends to get very nice cars. You might call John Ashe there and tell him what you want.

Also, Ferrari Market Letter could be worth a subscription if you're eager to get moving on this. Lots of ads for cars from knowledgeable owners. And, FerrariAds here can be a good place to check.

Overall, if you want something other than red, you're going to need to be more active in the search. I was after a blu sera/crema 328, but the owner of Cauley decided to keep it for himself. Then there was a blu chiaro that I decided against, but it sold shortly after my visit to the dealer. Mine is nero metallico/beige, and was sold rapidly while I was window shopping and then fortuntely came on the market again -- and I wired the money right away.

I spoke to the salesman on that one. Of course, he claims that it was in a minor traffic accident. Would need to do a PPI. Does anyone have access to carfax and can email me the full report? I'm curious what it says exactly around fire or collision.

Thank all for all the advice.

I think that car may have been sold; I just checked the Autocheck on it and it reports a new lien as of 4/1/08 in Riverside County, CA. If you suspect differently, please give me your email address and I will email you the Autocheck report :)

    My best,

    Scott

Thanks for the info. With references to both THEFT and FIRE in the same report, I think I'll pass! I'll find my 328 eventually. Just need to be patient.

There's a silver 328 in San Jose, CA fro 29.5K on Ebay right now: 57K miles. I did an Autocheck on it and it checks out clean; seemingly a CA car. I'm sure it needs a Major Service done but... Interested?

If you can deal with red, FChat'er BrianC is selling his low mile 88 328 on FerrariAds (link above). I haven't seen this one, but I saw the 355 he sold and it was VERY nice.

Dan, if you're new to Ferrari, the best advice is to buy a car that's "all there". Good 328s tend to start around $50K and go up to $70K for lower mileage ones. It kind of depends on how picky you are, but it doesn't take too many broken switches or other stuff to make a 'cheap' 328 into a $50K car. (There are some time capsule 328s with zero miles and six-figure prices, but then you basically have a piece of Italian metal sculpture for the garage...)

Also, and you probably knew this, and it's not just a Ferrari thing, but really nice sports cars are just easier to sell if you decide the Ferrari thing isn't for you. Everyone expects Ferraris to look like new. Bear that in mind. Most of us have memorized the number/size of stone chips on our cars' front bumpers.

My recommendation is not to be a bottom feeder for any older Ferrari. Buy the best example you can find. There's no virtue in overpaying, but my sense now is that the good 328s are all owned by guys who know what they have and selected that model specifically. If I were in your position, I'd set aside $60K for the car and $10K for service and incidentals.

Thanks for that great advice! Seriously. That's what the kind of info I'm looking for.
What's the story with these $40-50k 328s I see all over?
