That definitely has to be mark kahn.

Can someone clue me in as why someone would buy a clean title only? And then what would he do with his car?

I think people buy clean titles, then get a 'questionable' car - wrecked, stolen, etc... then, make a fake VIN plate using the clean title VIN, put that clean VIN plate on the car and whaaaala...... you now have a clean car w/ clean title you can market to some unsuspecting person.........

The better question is what does Mark do with his car once the title is gone?? Part it out??

This whole situation is fishy at best............

Is this legal? It certainly doesn't sound like it should be. I thought titles were bonded to specific vehicles come what may - otherwise, the title documentation is pretty worthless.

It's his property, so I don't know if there's anything technically illegal about selling a piece of paper. The issue is that a title wash is illegal, and it's unlikely anyone buying a title for 18 grand is just going to frame it and hang it on the wall. I would think the 'illegal' part comes in if it's done knowingly to aid/abet a crime.

Assuming Mark's car is still intact, selling a title will render the marketability of the car itself into mush. If someone else uses the title via transfer, then Mark won't be able to get a duplicate title b/c it won't be in his name anymore. If the car was totaled or some other insurance issue, then the title isn't really clean anymore anyways. This whole thing just doesn't make sense, unless he wrecked the car without insurance and he's parting it out with the hopes that the title won't matter any more. But, even in that case, it's kinda shady to sell the title knowing what it potentially will be used for.

Unless it has Tiger Woods or OJ Simpson as the owner (or some other celebrity), the paper isn't worth $18K.... unless someone needs a clean title, and he's selling the VIN Tag to go with it...

This smells worse than the fish market on Tuesday evening...

So the new ad should be, "355, cheap!"

I think I'll buy it then repo the car from him.

I read the same thing a while ago. It looks like the listing has been edited. Toned down a little to remove some obvious references about what it can be used for.

Regardless, it is disgusting that not only do people do this but that they blatantly market it.

If you assume instead the car isn't intact anymore, then the whole thing makes more sense, doesn't it?

Another possibility is that the car has been exported and the title is still here.

Florida has gone to a paperless titling system like California. When you buy a car, they dont give you the title anymore. The state keeps it all on file electronically and records any liens that are placed against it. If you are selling the car to someone in a different state or moving, then you can request a paper title be sent to you.

Not to get too far off topic here, but from reading the link is this something primarily for vehicles with liens? I bought a car mid December and received a paper title from the state in January. I bought my Ferrari at the beginning of January and was expecting I'd receive another title soon. But one was bought in 2009, the other in 2010. Maybe they just started this?

Back on-topic...helping some lowlife pass off a damaged vehicle as clean puts the person with the title in the same class as the person with the car in my opinion.
