I am curious what the current market is on 427 Cobras? Not a kit car. I know of one that may be for sale and it is on the registry. All papers and everything, unrestored and all original, put in storage a few years back. British racing green. No racing history. May be a slim opportunity so I want to be prepared. Your thoughts?

The value depends on a lot of things with a Shelby 427 car.

    Is it a:
    CSX3000
    CSX4000
    CSX1000
    CSX6000

It could also be a COB or COX number as well (RHD/Export Versions)

CSX3259 that was fully restored sold at RM's Amelia Island Auction in March for $836,000.

Thanks for all your info. This car was bought at a Ford dealership new supposedly? Second owner. I am not that well versed on them. I know a good deal when I hear it though! Low price was being touted so we will see when the time comes I guess. Thanks,Rex

Being sold at a Ford dealer might mean nothing, Shelby's were sold at Ford dealers, but many dealers in the 1970's until today sold/sell replicas and continuation cars because there has always been demand. Hope you get it and its a CSX3000.

Autokraft versions were often sold at ford dealerships in the mid to late 80's. great cars but not Shelby.

the continuation cars are basically worth around build cost, imho. they'll make as many as they can. they car not collectable, imho. the only reason they are in the registry is to reduce fraud.

autokrafts are $60k ish to $100k. the lower end were the run of the mill 5.0 mustang powered versions sold at the ford dealers. some 351w and 427 version floating around. great cars but given $100k - i'd buy a kirkham.

i'd pull out all the stops to buy a real 3000 car.......

The reason is that many vintage racing events will allow in a car that
had some connection with racing in the golden era, such as a run at Sebring, Daytona, or something in Europe. Many street-looking 289 Cobras today were in fact race cars raced by amateurs back in the day.

As far as replicas, since Mk/IVs are aluminum bodied and built by AC I would rate them above any other replica, even a Kirkham because they have more of a tie to the Real Thing. Mike McCluskey can always retrofit an original Cobra style dashboard to make them look in-period.

while they are aluminum.... mkiv bodies are not the same. the nose is stretched and some other EPA safety changes of sorts.

brian angliss bought the bucks from AC and sorta reconstructed the whole shop.

    REXT,

Get the CSX number. Many "real" Cobras out there, even in the registry that are just continuation cars. Once you have the CSX number you can get a better idea of value.

If you would rather not say which number it is on a public forum, I would call Tom Kirkham at Kirkham Motorsports. He is very versed in all things Cobra, not just the products that he and his brother make. (Which are head and shoulders above all other replicas and stand on their own as Kirkhams, not just Cobra replicas).

If Tom can't help you, he can put you in touch with someone who can.

Agreed and I have an aluminum continuation 427. They are in the Registry for a number of reasons. That aside, the values will continue to rise with price increases though as getting a new aluminum bodied continuation car is a long 18 month wait. Dealers were even seen advertising to by used ones for resale. They will hold their value though.

Should production on the Continuation series stop, however, the entire game changes and I could see values doubling overnight especially as to the aluminum continuation Cobras. But as long as you can buy new ones "collectability" is in question.

I think you are basically right although I think if prices doubled someone would just start building more there are enough people involved in shelby now that they will continue to license then for as long as someone would buy them. Even Now the fiberglass cars are built in south africa by Hitech and the aluminum cars are built by kirkham and sent to south africa from poland to paint and final assembly .. (at least thats how they did the 50th anniversary cars)still kicking myself for selling my 40th anniversary blue alum. car.
