According to autosport.com, Alex Wurz has ended his career as a racer in F1 with immediate effect. He will not even take part in the Brazilian GP. Tomorrow his replacement will be announced. Probably testdriver Nakajima.

So, what is your best memory of Alex Wurz? I remember he used to drive with one red and one blue shoe. It was said that is was because of his superstition, but it turned out to be a simple gadget, just for fun. He also did well filling in for Gerhard Berger at Benetton.

That's sad to hear, I really like Alex, and I would have liked to see him one last time in Brazil. His replacement is undoubtedly going to be Kazuki Nakajima, he's the only one who's been testing that Williams car.

Strange that he refused to comment on his situation when asked before the race on US TV. What did he have to loose at that point?

I liked his comments when asked why JPM quit F1: "I think he likes to eat Hamburgers. Now he can do that again in the US." Or something along those lines.

Worst Wurz moment: When DC almost decapitated him with the RB going over his cockpit.

Who will take Wurz' place in Interlagos?

Wouldn't it be great if Renault would lend Piquet Jr. to Williams? I'm sure the locals would love it.

Kind of strange he walked before the last round after trying so hard for so many years to get a racing seat.
Clearly he was sacked and they are all being polite about this. Maybe his replacement is bringing in a suitcase full of money... or yens

I think you're right, and they wanted to evaluate him in a GP before the season if over. I think this shows the respect they have for Alex and his potential services as a tester or advisor. This makes Scott Speed's exit look like an execution, lol.

That's possible, but Nakajima is the only available driver with sufficient test time in the Williams.

Very nice guy and at least he can say he took the uncompetitive Williams to a podium during his last year, something even future WDC Rosberg didn't do ( we'll see on both counts). Still wish he had told Peter Windsor "I heard some bad news about you too. You lost a few teeth just before the race in China...".

I thought that was HIGHLY inappropaite and Windsor should be ashamed of himself.

First he tries to lodge his snout in Keanu Reeves sphincter and act like anyone actually knows or cares who Peter Windsor is, then he gets the usual blow off by all the drivers we actually want to hear from, then he horns his way into Heikis spot with ITV, then he accosts Wurz and asks if he's really retiring. He does it as the man is frickin' getting his helmet on, before it's been announced, and immediately before he gets in the car for the last GP of his life. Give the man some room, Peter, and if you want to be a "hard hitting innovative reporter" then how about asking questions that people actually give a crap about - like ask Alonso whats the deal with him and Ron Dennis in the post-race, rather than asking innane BS like "so how were your tires in the 2nd stint?" only to get a stupid canned response like "for sure they were OK but we had some problems and lost a bit of time in the first sector".

Windsor is an embarassment. At least his name is fitting - WINDsor. He's full of hot air.

Lmao, that would make my day. I hope we can see Wurz in DTM or Lemans, although Rosberg is quicker, Wurz is still a good racer and even better tester and developer.

it's a pity F1 has become a money thing rather than a talent thing. same case at Spyker. what has that Jap guy do for the team? nothing! Narain Karthikeyan was available and more talented too, IMO, and they should have gone for him.

as for Williams case, it's gonne be another sad Japanese story in 2 weeks time.

    just got this :

The Williams Toyota team today confirmed that Kazuki Nakajima will race for the team in the final Grand Prix of the 2007 season at Interlagos in Brazil in just under a fortnight’s time.

The 22-year old Japanese driver, this year’s GP2 series Rookie of the Year, is the team’s official test and reserve driver. He has covered over 7,000km in the FW29 in testing and has represented the team at five Grand Prix as a Friday driver.

The intention behind Nakajima’s nomination is to build and develop his experience and is not an evaluation exercise for a race seat in 2008.

“You cannot assess a driver’s capability on the basis of one race but this is an ideal opportunity to develop Kazuki’s experience," explained Team Principal Frank Williams.
"I am confident he will approach the race in a very workmanlike and focused way.”

For his part, Nakajima said, “I am very grateful to the team who have given me this opportunity. I hope I now know the car very well and thankfully have done some Friday driving as recently as Shanghai. This is a chance I intend to grab with both hands and repay the faith the team are showing in me with a strong performance.”

    Good for him.

Does anybody know what the process for getting a super license is? Is that something the FIA can approve over night or do all the test drivers have a super license anyway? I always thought it was some bureaucratic process clobbered with red tape. Anybody?

I record the races and skip his walk through pit lane when possible. Most avoid him as did Weber after Windsor dissed him per his commentary moments before.

    According to Motorsport.com magazine:

A superlicense, the license required to be eligible to race in Formula One, has certain criteria to be met before being issued. A victory in a National F3 Championship, or a sufficient level of achievement in Formula 3000, IRL, or CART must be proved. All drivers in these series possess a Grade A license, which is also required to apply for a superlicense. In addition, a driver must previously have signed with a Formula One team, as did Raikkonen, who caught the attention of Peter Sauber. It is also essential that all superlicense recipients finish 300km at race speeds in a current F1 machine in a maximum 2-day testing session. Ultimately, as it is the decision of the FIA, these requirements can be overlooked.
