Will we see the new iPhone? I'm hoping they are ready to ship tomorrow.
I think we'll see the new iPhone. I can't wait! . I read this article a bit ago and checked my upgrade status. I was bumped up...I had checked last week and was eligible for an upgrade in November....this morning that status has changed to eligible now. http://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/07/atandt-moves-up-iphone-upgrade-eligibility-on-eve-of-wwdc-keynote/
yes new iPhone coming later this month, June 24th. iPhone OS or as it is called now, iOS4 will be available as a free upgrade for iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPod Touch 2nd Gen(I think) and newer on June 21st. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm getting one too, but keeping my jailbroken 3G until the whole tethering thing is sorted out. I know it will be enabled for a fee, but you need one of the new data plans to do so. Might have to jailbreak again, unless tethering can be enabled somehow on the unlimited data plans without a jailbreak. That's the only reason for me to jailbreak now.
Right now I'm not planning on upgrading from my 3G until AT&T comes out with their 4G network. I am planning on Jailbreaking once 4.0 comes out so that I can tether without having to switch to AT&Ts stupid tiered data plans.
I jailbroke my 3G and had nothing but problems. The springboard was unstable, my voicemail would intermittently function, and I couldn't find a skin I really really liked. A friend of mine jailbroke his and has loved it ever since. Never had a problem. I think the iPhone 4 is going to be really fabulous. Thinner, better battery, higher res display. Really excited to pick up the phone. My 3G feels so slow these days.
It's gonna be a while before 4G is rolled out, much less nationwide. If you keep waiting to upgrade for the next best thing, you'll never upgrade. What jailbreak method were you using?? Some tools worked better than others. Either that, or you probably did something wrong, or tweaked with the OS too much. I've been jailbroken since I can remember, no problems at all.
I'm fine with waiting for 4G, there just aren't any new must have features for me. I've heard that AT&T is planning on having 4G available in some areas by 2011 and nation wide shortly after. My guess is that the EVO 4G and a verizon iPhone will get AT&T to expedite the process a bit.
4G in SOME areas, don't count on it being nationwide till late 2011 at the earliest, if not most likely till 2012. There won't be an iPhone on Verizon anytime soon. People tend to forget about the 5 year exclusivity contract with AT&T. We're only 3 years into that contract. The soonest Verizon could get the iPhone, if it ever does, would be June/July 2012. I've been saying this time and again, there will not be a CDMA iPhone. If Verizon gets an iPhone in the future, it will be LTE, which by then AT&T and T-Mobile, and the rest of the world, will be using. I don't see Sprint ever getting the iPhone, as they are doing their own version of 4G, completely different than LTE 4G.
I'm not sure there is any "official" support for jailbreaking, at least not here in the States - Maybe doable/allowed in Europe (?) I unlocked my first one (to get custom ring tones!), but haven't bothered subsequently as I keep hearing tales of woe (bricked phones, inability to sync etc). As with most things Apple, you've really got to do it their way or not at all..... Don't like their way? Get something running Android. Cheers, Ian
Yeah, after doing some more research it isn't available. I guess what I read was from someone in Europe in which case the carriers will, by law, unlock the phone. Anyone had any luck getting their phone replaced by Apple? I might try to get mine replaced before selling it since I have a small crack in the corner of the screen.
Jailbreaking≠unlocking, although here in the US, you do need to jailbreak in order to sim unlock a phone. They are not the same thing however. I'm still on a 16GB white 3G, which my contract ends this month. I'm gonna call AT&T and see if they will unlock my iPhone. I'm in the military, and I have had other phones unlocked with AT&T and T-Mobile before, whenever I deployed overseas. As for your tales of woe, nonsense, if you know what you're doing, they work great. It's so easy to jailbreak and unlock now with the new tools available, literally takes seconds. I haven't had any problems, and I've been tethering for quite some time now. As for your Android suggestion, that doesn't make a difference. Here in the US, phones are carrier locked no matter who you get it from. Doesn't matter what OS the phone is running. I think there was one Android phone that was unlocked, but AFAIK, all other phones are still locked. I dropped my iPhone back in Nov/Dec of last year, and messed up one of the buttons. I knew it was my fault, so I went in to the Apple store ready to pay for the repair. The phone obviously had wear and tear, as it was 1 1/2 years old by then. Scratches, nicks, and hairline cracks. The Apple Genius took one good look at it, and replaced it with a new one right on the spot. Apple is pretty good when it comes to things like that, as long as you don't go in their thinking they owe you the world. Be sincere and humble, and you'll be taken care of.
My bad. I stand corrected. Thx. How about S/W (and F/W?) updates? Do you keep yours "up to date", or restore before doing any upgrades? The "tales" (& as I said, I have no up to date experience) seem to center around this.... And random apps crashing? I guess I could do it, but I don't need tethering and it seems like Apple keep moving the goalposts (in an attempt to stop it?) OTOH, I can see your need for it to be unlocked (even if not jailbroken ) OK, but at least with Android you aren't locked into AT&T and/or "The Apple Way" - Neither of which cause me any grief BTW, but it seems to many it does - "AT&T sucks", "iTunes sucks" are common themes here as you know..... Cheers, Ian EDIT: PS; +1 on the Genius Bar suggestion - Good luck! - Let us know what they do.
Updating/Restoring an iPhone has never been a problem even if you are jailbroken/unlocked, unless you wanted to keep said jailbreak and/or unlock. The trick was to not rush and update your phone whenever a new firmware was released until the jailbreak community gave the OK. If you "accidentally" updated your F/W, you just had to wait and pray that there would be a new jailbreak figured out soon. With some F/W's, you could update and still keep your jailbreak/unlock, others you had to update or restore your phone, and then reapply the new jailbreak. Some F/W's also update your bootloader/bootrom, killing the unlock, but still able to jailbreak. Some phones have workarounds. AFAIK, with the exception of 3GS w/ FW 3.1.3 and the latest baseband, all iPhones can be downgraded to older F/W to JB and unlock. Like I said, you need to have a basic understanding to this whole jailbreaking thing and not update your phone right away. As for Apps crashing, that has more to do with how the app was developed. Me personally, I don't have any 3rd party apps from the jailbreak community, other than Winterboard, that allows for an actual wallpaper and lots of other tweaks. No problems here at all. Now that iOS 4.0 is being released, the only reason for me to jailbreak is to keep my tethering. You're still locked to whatever carrier you have, even if you have an Android phone. Remember, not all Android phones are available on all carriers. "AT&T sucks", well so do the other providers. It all depends where you're at. Here in NC where I'm at now, and back in So Cal, AT&T works great for me. Verizon and T-Mobile really suck here. At another base about 45 mins away from here, it's the opposite, at least on base. AT&T worked great out in town. One thing I noticed about people who say or think iTunes sucks is because they're under the impression that you can only get music and other other media from iTunes/Apple only. People don't know you can rip music from your CD collection, or import them from other downloads, wether it be Amazon, torrents, etc. They also think Apple is still using DRM on their music, which is no longer the case.
