Hello Mel, I just noticed your post. Did you get what you needed to fix the X? If not, let me know. I can give you directions, it can be cleared with SD2 or SD3. Leonardo will not fix this error. Like the other guys mentioned, It happens due to a voltage spike or short in the electrical system.
Thanks everyone for this thread. My car had the same issue since I started it after the winter with a weak battery. @Michael B posted the solution that worked on my car. Some additional infos for future reference: We hooked up the SD2 with the "B-cable" (that's what the mechanic called it) and read the "cruscotto marelli" file. After that he ran a diagnosis and then slected item 8 which lets you configure the dash. Mine was in fact set to F1 transmission even though it's a manual. Setting the country and the Transmission type fixed the issue immediately.
Resurrecting an old tread here. My car just did the same thing. Has the X and the F1 transmission fault symbol (even though it’s a manual). Mine also is showing 5555555 on the odometer, is this part of the same issue?
Yes, low battery or a jumper pack can cause voltage spikes which are not suppressed sufficiently by the built in circuit protection of the instrument cluster. The Net result is the electronically erasable read only memory (also known as EEPROM) has been software corrupted in you dash panel. The instrument cluster eeprom has Checksums which are used to verify if corruption has occurred ( a bit like shutting down Window abruptly without powering off safely, sometimes the filesystem gets corrupted and needs repair), if it has this, X is what gets displayed. The 8 pin eeprom chip is the majority of the time just fine and just needs reprogramming. Even if it needed replacement it's a very simple 8 pin chip which costs $3 and is readily available. Trev
Thanks for the reply Trev. Is this something that can be done with an inexpensive SD2 that I see advertised for $100 or is a Ferrari proprietary scan tool needed?
If the car needs to be jump started what’s the best way ? Jump pack, regular jumper cables, install a new battery ? What do you do in a bind ? Thanks
It may be able to use a $100 dollar tool but in my case,(430) I had to bring it to a dealer who then supposedly had to put it in communication realtime with Ferrari in Maranello. It corrected the problem, but of course it had the Ferrari tax $$
