Thinking about buying one of those expanding hoses? Think again. All junk. I even tried the top of the line Dap Xhose pro. If you really insist on buying one maybe get the China cheapie from Home Depot and keep taking it back and getting a free replacement. The X Pro hose did not last that much longer than the cheap China knock offs. What a waste of money. Really cool when they are in good condition. Mine lasted 5 months with very occasional use. Hopefully someone does a search on them sees this and does not buy one.

The surgical rubber inside those things was never intended for this purpose. Over time it breaks from the internal pressure. Basically, they all break.

I can't believe people expected anything out of that.

My most recent one the cloth like outer covering split open. The inner hose expanded and burst. They are wonderful things when they work. Light weight. Easy to move around. We love it in the garage for washing cars. I may send it back with $11 and see how long the second one lasts. I bought two 75 footers. I've had a few cheap China hoses before that and they don't last all the long also. Someone should make one that lasts. If the outer material was stronger they would maybe go a year or more. My wife loves them as she has lots of flowers to water in the summer. I've made good money making quality products when I see existing products out there are low grade. I'm guessing it would only be a $1 or so added to the cost to make better hoses. But someone is greedy and only wants to make lots of $$$. They would rather make a $50 profit and sell junk than make $48 and make a quality product.

The cheapy ones have a internal hose that fail lengthwise. Like it is a ribbon and glued to make a tube. They start to leak at the split. It is not extruded. The Dap seems to be extruded and better. But my Dap failed on the outer covering. Split open like a banana. Once that happened the internal hose expanded a lot and burst. I'm guessing one could make a stronger outer covering. The inside tube on my Dap seemed to be fairly HD. Way thicker than the cheapy China one.

I agree with you, they are junk. However they do serve a useful purpose in the wintertime. I have a couple of high end rubber hoses, but trying to wash the cars with them is a pain when they are so inflexible. The expandable hoses are so easy to use.

I am on my third one. When the first two split I just took them back to CVS and exchanged them for a new ones. We shot up to 50 degrees last Sat. so I washed the cars and I noticed the fabric was starting to fray. I'll probably get one more use out of it before bringing it back to get my fourth!

I sent Dap an email stating their Xpro hose product is junk. They called me telling me they are sending me a new one. Yea. Maybe we will get several months use out of this one also. Hope someone makes a quality product someday soon. When they work they are really excellent. Lightweight etc. We really love them. Wish they were truly HD.

I bought one of these at Target for winter use only. Works great for that use! There's now way I'm fighting with my good rubber hose either! Best part is, they're on clearance now at Target and last I saw they were $9 for 50 footers. I would never use it as an everyday hose though.

Are these Dap or China cheapies? Dap advertises they sell quality hoses and all imitations are low grade. Unfortunately that is not that true of a statement. Dap may last longer but not by a whole lot.

OK, just got my 4th free one yesterday. Even the store manager is amused. Hey if they want to sell crap that's their business. They probably make a good profit on these because most people probably just throw them away.

I might have to return one more before the good weather sets in and I can use my good hoses.

I know how these are manufactured, the inner expandable tubing is extruded. The DAP and "Made in USA" versions are made of good quality material.. whereas the China versions use lower quality material. The most expensive component is the expanding outer cloth.

This fabric is probably the most expensive part of the entire hose. The cloth is what prevents the hose from bursting, if there are defects in the cloth, the hose will burst at the weakest spot. Especially if the cloth is damaged, pierced, torn etc.

The pricing of hoses is all about the weight/volume of rubber material. The Xp-Hoses are very thin, therefore they will cost alot less because they are using less material, but will be much weaker. The regular green garden hoses weigh 20 lbs, they are very heavy because they are meant never to break, but cost much more because of the increaes in weight.

The "gimmick" is that the Xp-hoses are expanding, lightweight hose. But the entire sales ploy was to manufacture a cheaper, but useful garden hose. The expanding rubber, and outer cloth is just the result of engineering a thinner hose.

Your comment is precisely accurate.. they are cheap low cost hosing which are meant to be thrown away. If you need something durable and high strength then you will always need to buy the regular "green" garden hose. But these cost x3 of the Xp-hoses.

    Found a better replacement:

Amazon.com : Water Right PSH-050-MG-4PKRS Polyurethane Lead Safe Ultra-Light Slim Garden Hose, 50-Foot x 7/16-Inch, Olive Green : Lightweight Hose : Patio, Lawn & Garden

Unbelievably flexible. Very light weight. Smallish in diameter. Probably flow about as much water per minute as the expanding hoses. I'm replacing all my hoses with these as my expanding hoses fail (that shouldn't take long!). Even sooner as they are so nice. Very durable. As far as I know it does not hurt them to leave them out in the sun all day every day.

If you want to run a sprinkler etc you should probably use a standard garden hose as they have a large inner diameter.

Won't last with a power washer, that's for certain. Ask me how I know.
