Xbox is just out of warranty. Called microsoft and they said it'd be $100 to fix. On the internet there are these videos of the 'three rings of death' repair which is basically a dismantle job and a few washers to raise the video card away from the heat sink to provide cooling. My problem isn't the three rings but no video output. Put a disk in and you hear the game but see no picture. I don't have an HDMI output so i'm stuck with just the componet cable output. I've tried it with a different cable and the same thing happens. A new Xbox is only $199 and i could just use my existing hard drive and controllers but if i could fix myself i'd rather. Does anyone know if the three rings of death fix would work on mine even if the problem i'm having isn't the three rings? What to do?
How many lights, and is there an error number popping up. My roommates 360 went down we got Error 68, found out it was/is a hard drive problem.
Buy the new unit at $199, I don't know which generation you have but it may be more sensible to get the latest version & hopefully the issue has been corrected with the newer versions. Sell you non-working unit on EBAY to help balance the cost out.
I don't get anything but the normal green lights. The music from the game and intro noise all come through. It's as if the processor is working and game is playing but just with no video. Audio is fine.
I don't know if these would work, but it's worth looking at I guess: http://www.justin-cook.com/wp/2008/08/06/how-to-fix-an-xbox-360-with-sound-but-no-video/ http://www.fixya.com/support/t214048-xbox_360_wont_show_picture_but_sound (I like Solution #4) http://www.amazon.com/tag/xbox%20360/forum?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx1J7W3N25TVQ52&cdThread=Tx3M6FF4OAAGG8O http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1GGLS_enUS291&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=360+no+video You probably already have googled it, but I thought it would help. I suggest getting a new one, just because most of the fixes are temporary and not permanent unless you want to open it up.
Thanks! According to the responses the three rings of death fix is the same for my problem. I'll watch the video on youtube a few more times and try the fix myself and if it fails a new arcade xbox it is. Midnight club is here and i'm not gonna go without.
Alright, i found a fix, well this is for my problem, I don't know if it would work for you since you cant see the XMB or whatever its called for 360, sorry, XMB is for PS3. This worked for me.
That sucks, wanna send it my way? I have no games. Well, my roommate does but its somewhere far away. oh yeah, if you think its a hard drive problem, take the hard drive apart, and hook it up to a desktop, and clean it up from there.
Microsoft just extend the XBOX 360 warranty to a 3 year if you have the 3 red lights are you sure your unit is out of warranty? Just had the dead ring on my Xbox last july and they fix it free of charge in a 10 days period just call microsoft and tell them about the red lights. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/resources/warrantyupdate.htm
Mine will be four years old in Dec. I called Microsoft and they said it'd be $100 and that it was out of warranty. Technically it isn't the three rings but just no video. According to others with the same problem the three rings fix (washers over broken solder on mounts) will fix it.
I say open it up, and fix it yourself since there is no warranty, unless you want to dish out the $100 bucks for it to be fixed "professionally", or buy a new one and keep the non-working one for parts.
My 360 started scratching my discs. Root problem is cheap dvd drives that have poor support of laser lens. After playing awhile, the lens contacts the disc and puts a nice big scratch on the underside. I called M$ and was told "we know the problem and can fix it,.......for $100!" I hate M$ but didn't want to walk away from the $1K + in games so I bought a new 360 with HDMI. F M$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
did you check the switch on the video cable to make sure it did not accidentally get switched from HD to normal tv output. it happened to me once and i could hear everything, just no video.
Are you sure that it isn't a problem with your video inputs on your TV? Try hooking up to another TV or plug in your DVD player into the same video inputs to eliminate that as a possible problem. Take the unit apart....try the fix...worst case you buy a new one....
