I was ther like 15 years ago, so I am sure it has changed alot. At the time it had some underground river tour, some ruins, a very nice beach, and the "swim with the dolphins" thing.
Xel-ha is more like a natural reserve or something like that. Very nice for snorkeling.

I go to the Cancun/Mayan Riviera area very frequently and I must say that Xcaret is worth the trip and the admission if you have not been there. They've got many activites during the day (underground river, swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, scuba, small ruins, etc) and Pre-Hispanic shows at night.

Xel-ha (www.xel-ha.com) is a water inlet with great snorkeling and acquarium for the family, different from Xcaret but a nice visit too. They also have dolphins, river and other activities.

Grupo Xcaret based in Cancun owns Xcaret and operates Xel-ha under a Government concession.

If you have time visit both. If you need to choose one go to Xcaret but definitely check out the Mayan ruins of Tulum (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulum)

Xcaret was right next to the resort we stayed in. We walked over there a few times...and it was ok. But the river and the show were very good. In fact, the show was AMAZING. If anything, go and see the show.

At Tulum, you definitely want to engage one of the guides. As amazing as it seems, they will explain to you that much of it remains buried underfoot!!

Moreover, it's hard to imagine, but there was at least one human sacrifice PER DAY on the alter of the highest building.

we just did the Xcaret thing a couple of weeks ago - a day my wife and daughter will never forget (they did the dolphin thing). But a little pricey - maybe $1k for the day by the time the dolphin costs with pics and DVD, the dinner show (first half was very good - 2nd half wasn't so great imo), pics from the underwater river swim, and whatever else a family can spend money on.

    Highly recommend Xcaret.
