I'm not sure I want an excuse for driving my F-car at night. It's crawling with deer around here. I think I've hit at least a dozen over the years. One icy night I hit two separate deer. One on the way to where I was going and one on the way back. Luckily I was driving a truck with a snow plow. Both deer spun down the road like hockey pucks with no damage to my truck!

    Thanks for the info though!

    Hello wildegroot

WOW someone with the same fear.

I just got my first Ferrari and although I do generate some revenue from car deer accidents “I’m in the towing business” I sure as hell don’t want to hit one myself,
Furthermore if one jumps out at pointblank range all the light in the world won’t help!

    Thanks
    Charles

You know you can upgrade the wiring harness and bulbs to better halogen or Xenon without going full HID, and get a good amount of improvement....

Yeah, around here it's hilly and they just dive off of the enbankments onto the road in front of you. I hate driving slow too so a lot of times it doesn't matter what kind of lights you have. Once I had a deer dive accross the front wheel of my motorcyle. I had to lean way back to avoid getting hit.

My wife got a hoof gouge in the hood of her car when a deer passed right in front of her winshield.

Deer whistles help but I'd just as soon not drive my Ferrari at night when the deer move around.

    Welcome to F-chat BTW!

Ok, my apologies for posting. Saw it in this month's Classic Car and felt someone might have been interested.

As for driving at night, do it here all the time and we have foxes, turkeys, bears, deer, moose, turtles, porcupines... i generally see at least two of the aforementioned animals everyday. Had three bears around my car in the driveway one day according to my wife (mom bear and 2 cubs).

Steve, Sorry if I came off that way. I'm sure lots of guys in the suburbs or city don't have the nocturnal wild life problems but I do and I'd rather just park the Ferrari at night. You live in the sticks like me but have apparently been getting away with driving at night. I'm not exaggerating my deer kills (and I don't hunt creatures that can't shoot back).

We luckily don't have moose but a friend of my brother's destroyed the front of his truck hitting a bear. Cows and horses will ruin your whole day if you hit one too. We just have deer splattering on windshields like other people have mosquitos. :)

I concurr, DO NOT just drop a HID bulb into lenses designed for incandescent bulbs. The light pattern is terrible.

I installed the Sylvania X6054 HID Xenarcs about 3 years ago. I really like them. The come with lenses specificly designed for the bulbs. They have a nice flat top to the low beams, and project nicely down the road. I've had 2 shops say it was the first car they've ever seen with 'perfect' beam patterns.

Unfortunately, Sylvania was discontinuing this system when I bought mine, so I suspect that there aren't any out there anymore.

Non-UK interested parties, beware! These headlights are for right-hand drive (look at the pattern). You will blind oncoming traffic and not get the desired improvement in your lane...

I have mentioned in some other threads my feelings toward lights and deer. If any of you are astronomers, or do anything outdoors at night without using lights, and after being out in the dark night for over an hour have ever had the luxury of mistakenly looking into high beam headlights from half a mile distant, you might consider what would happen to a deer. I was totally blinded this way one night after being out in the night for about three hours. My eyes had totally adjusted to darkness. I could make out my shoe laces, power cords running through the grass, even the blades of grass. That night I was in a different area that had cars going by on a highway, and all night had been looking away and covering my face to protect my night vision. Then I goofed and looked up at an oncoming car, and was instantly blind. A maglight flashlight didnt even help me see anything for at least 30 seconds or more.

Deer are car and light dumb. They just stand and stare and and then either just get hit, or run wildly without knowing where they are going. It is my opinion that as lights have developed and become continuously brighter, deer are having greater difficulty. I have been lucky to never hit one, and Minnesota leads the US with some 14,000 car/deer accidents per year. But for the last 20 years I have forced myself to drive at night only on low beam and keep my speed down. I have even taken to adjusting the lights down lower than normal and just driving more carefully. Ask really old people who grew up with carbide lights if they remember a lot of people hitting deer.
