2002 and older XKR's came with a 4.0 liter V8 Supercharged engine that produced 370HP. 2003 and newer XKR's come with the 4.2 liter V8 S/C engine that produces 390HP. For 03 a lot of other changes were made to make the XKR better. A 6-speed automatic transmission replaced the previous 5 speed automatic. The nav system was changed(borrowed from the X-type and new XJ) and is much improved compared to nearly useless nav that came before. Adaptive Cruise Control was also offered for the first time in 03. Brembo brakes also were standard on 03 or newer models. On older models brembo brakes were an option. So go with the 03 XKR or newer if you can.

    What's New for 2000
    No major changes.

    What's New for 2001
For 2001, there are standard child seat-anchor points for the rear seats and a reverse parking-control system. The premium audio system with a six-disc CD changer and the GPS navigation system are now standard equipment on XK8s. Topping things off are minor exterior styling changes and a new no-cost scheduled maintenance program that covers four regular service visits under the four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty.

    What's New for 2002
    No major changes.

    What's New for 2003
Trying hard to keep up with blossoming competition, Jaguar makes significant modifications to its sports car. Changes to the exterior are limited to different wheels, slightly different badging, available (standard on the R) xenon headlamps and some new colors, including a lovely Jaguar Racing Green. The most important alterations lie under the hood, with two new engines managed by a six-speed automatic transmission. Standard safety equipment now includes a stability control system and BrakeAssist. In all, there are 900 changes to Jaguar's beautiful XK.

cant get 04 oddly enough. heh.

    What's New for 2005
Subtle refinements for the XK-Series this year include freshened exterior styling elements, new wheel designs and a standard driver-controlled automatic speed limiter.

Before you drive off you can set the max speed of the car on the limiter IE urban driving you can set the limiter so that the car cannot exceed 30mph, motorways limit it to 70 mph, and so on.
