OK, I toss 100% of the junk mail bank offers I get. The wifey kept one of them from Capital One that touted "INSTANT APPROVAL AND 5.9% APR BALANCE TRASFERS IN 60 SECONDS"......Ya, right. So under the gun, I call them. I ask the guy what the percentage of applications are that actually get approved during the call. He told me it was above 50-60%. (I call BS on this one!). I go ahead with the over-the-phone application (Keep in mind I have decent income, a high FICO score and total CC debt less than $15K). He gets done and tells me I'll be notified by mail within 2-3 weeks. I reminded him of the 50-60% figure he gave me and he gave me the standard BS and an 800 number to call in 24 hours to follow up, in which I did today. On that call, the lady I spoke to stated it would be 2-3 weeks for a reply by mail. At that point, I got a supervisor on the line and stated my displeasure with their loss-leader practices.....I get the same BS, but she did state that the 50-60&% figure was REALLY bogus!

I'm ticked because I got sucked into a loss-leading, false marketing practice in which should be illegal! Who else has had this experience?

    PS / Cutie:

    1) I was beyond polite on both calls
    2) Both calls were routed in the US
    3) My gripe is valid!

You were declined. That is the notice you will get in the mail.

If you had been approved, they would have told you on the call. They (by law I think) have to mail you the decline noticed stating the reasons for the decline and what information (credit agencies data) they used to make their decision.

I also had a bad experience with capital one some time ago. The question here is whether getting declined affects your credit score.

I shred all Captial One mailings :)

I don't know how it works elsewhere but I was declined for a department store credit card once...you are allowed when you are declined to get a FREE copy of your credit history and the information as to why you are declined...

In my case someone else also had my name...of course different age/address etc etc inadvertently the credit bureau put her bad credit listing on my name...I guess my name came up first...so when the store checked my credit this red flag came up.

It was quite a fight with the credit bureau to get them to remove it...prove to them it was NOT me...and make my credit history clean again...also got an apology letter from the employee who made the mistake

So yes I guess it did affect my credit cause I was turned down for the store card

Being declined doesn't hurt your score, but the inquiry will hurt your score.

Not sure. Had the same scenario with my United VISA and my Indy Mac Visa cards (That were approved), both took about three weeks and I got their cards in the mail with an established line. What kills me is I can go into ANY department store and open an account with a clerk in lessthan three monutes and start shoppig! Something tells me they make more money selling your information off than they do with the first year of interest they pull down from you.

You recognized a fishing line, saw the bait, swam over knowing there would be trouble, swallowed everything in site and are now upset.

If I remember correctly, last time I looked at a Capital One offer, they charged 3% of the balance being transferred to the account, no upper limit. That's a helluva service charge for a large balance transfer.

I am happy to report that I am no longer bothered by Capital One and other iffy credit card offers. Over the last year, instead of shredding these offers, I have been returning the offers in the SASE writing "Remove from mail list" in magic marker on the offer. After costing them postage over that period, they finally got the message. AARP material is also happily absent.

you believed them? interested how they could prove this to you. I'd thought most call centres were under strict guidelines to respond as locals.

class action lawsuit might work, 60minutes expose maybe. want to be famous?

PS: CC balances is expensive money /rant-off :D

Capital One specializes in lending to below prime credit people.

    http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Banking/CreditCardSmarts/ABigLendersCreditCardTrap.aspx

The idea is they send you one of those applications, if you have not so good credit you apply and they give you the card with a low limit.
You excede that limit they charge you $35 over limit fee.
    they offer you another card
you go over that limit they slap you with $35 fee again
    offer you another card.

And so on. So, since you have fairly good credit they arent interested in you.

You know, I had yet to have received anything from Capital One...........until yesterday.

Now I'm doomed to get this crap forever.
