Had the unbelievable pleasure of getting to spend some time flying a Yak-52 today. What an airplane! Did several rolls, 4g turns, and general maneuvers. This was the first stick time that I've had in a long time and had an absolute blast. I'm including a pic of the instrument panel post flight to prove that I did not blow chunks.

I still had a big "what the hell am I doing" moment when I was strapping on the parachute...

    Very cool !
It's my understanding that they are quite robust, and nice aircraft to fly. That one looks especially nice.
Nothing like a few g's to make you feel like you are alive and cocky for the rest of the day :)

The owner referred to it as a brick $hithouse. Nice riding airplane. And yes, I seemed to wring out the 308 a bit harder this afternoon when I got home. I'll have Yak-smile for the rest of the week. :)

Hey! There's no shame in blowing chunks! In fact, I wear it as a badge of honor, like, "Look how sick this makes me, but I still do it! I'm so hard care, I suffer for my acro!"

    :)

The Yak looks really nice! Glad to hear you had some fun!

Really cool! My buddy teaches a bunch of these guys how to dog fight and formation fly these old Yak's on the west coast in a group called Red Star. Ever hear of them? They get some cool footage of those dog fights with those digital cameras mounted on them. He always comes home with a big ear to ear grin after tearing up the skies over Porterville, Ca. every May.

The field that we flew out of has 5 of them. Yes, 5. I've been invited back when they plan on doing formation flying and some mock dog fights. This could get addictive...

I used to do annual "condition" inspections on an "experimental" 54M that my pal George had at Renton field. The first time I went through that thing I remember looking at the way it was built inside the aft fuselage and wings and for lack of a better term; it's built like a bridge truss, really stout and robustly built. It was definately built for a purpose and it shows.

He says it would rather fly upside down that right side up. He came over my pool in it one day inverted and looked UP and waved at me...
