I'm looking at a 1986 with 25K miles. For resale, I'm wondering if it is better to have a later model, say a 1987 with 40k miles? All other things are equal on the two cars. Any input?

I have an 89 328, but any year is fine. Our local Ferrari sales manager bought an 86 for himself (his 2nd 328) so just go for the best car for the money.

    I don't think there's a real difference in quality, performance, appearance, etc. between an '86 328 and '87 (I assume you're talking about a 328?). I would take a well-documented/serviced '86 over a so-so '87, and would take the 25K mile 1986 over a 40K mile '87.

As a frame of reference, there seems to be a price overlap between average condition 348's (1990-4 I believe) and nice 328's (through '89). Maintenance costs are part of the reason for that difference. Obviously model year isn't the same value driver in the Ferrari world as it is in Camryland...

I would go for the 86 with the lower miles since the condition would be a bit nicer. The real question would be the comparison between a 88 and a 89 - since it has ABS.
    Good luck.

From when I was looking, I noticed a pretty substantial difference in price between '86-'87 cars and '88-'89 cars. Will the later cars continue to command a $5,000 - $7,500 premium? I don't know, but I would rather buy a good condition '86 or '87 and have the extra cash in my pocket.

Just my personal opinion, but I think the early 328's are about as low as they are going to go while the later models still have a little way to drop.
