Comparing two systems of two absorbtive mufflers, both with the same total volume of absorptive material. The case volumes in "A" are unequal, and the case volumes in "B" are equal.

How would the sound attenuation (loudness) and tone (high vs low pitch) vary between "A" and "B", if at all?

    Many thanks

Well, I would love to answer you with some kind of NASA sounding research worthy hypothesis, but cannot (I am sure someone else here will). I will say from experience they will probably vary a bit in tone only because I have had customers tell me that similar installs we have done have made a difference. Maybe the expansion of the heated exhaust gas in the first one matters as it makes it into the second one cooling down as it goes farther from the source.

Cool - from your experience, which would have the quieter tone, and what is the best way to get a deeper tone?
    Many thanks

Go with B. Deeper and quieter.
