    Heres my situation.

I need a tv for my new conference room. It will only be used to play DVDs/viewing rough special effects footage with my clients. This means that while I need the unit to have built in speakers the sound quality of those speakers isnt that important.

My question is for a budget of $1500 whats my best buy ? Id prefer a flat screen/wall mount but Im not against a rear projection unit if I get a significantly bigger/better quality screen for the same cash. Minimum screen size is 42" but Id like to be in the 50's if possible.

Viewing angle will be straight on as it will be at the end of a 12 person conference table. Lighting can be controlled to be dark but not pitch black as the room has floor to ceiling windows throughout and Ive only got blinds on them.

Im sure everyone is tired of the 'which tv' threads and while Ive looked through most of them and now understand the differences between LCD/Plasma/etc theres bound to be some videophiles here that can point me to the best bang for my dollar.

    Thanks in advance

    J

We just got a Sharp Aquous(sp?) in 52" at a reasonable discount, and it is great. I don't think I would go for a plasma due to the maintenance issues.

I picked up a 42" Phillips plasma last year and it has worked great. It mounted easily to the wall and the picture is very clear. It was around $1300 at Circuit City.
My parents just got 2 Vizios and my brother just got a 40" Samsung. So far everyone is happy with their flat TV purchases.

So after a month of research and price comparing I bought a Hitachi 50" 1080i Plasma for my office. Price at Best Buy was $1100 and seemed to be the best bang for my buck.

Just rebooting this thread in case anyone is looking for something similar.

Bravia is the best... Sharps have banding problems, that STILL HAVEN'T BEEN FIXED

Samsung might have a better panel (Sony gets panels from them), and they might be cheaper, then a Sony, but they cut corners, where it matters the most.
    THE INNER ELECTRONICS; VIDEO PROCESSORS

Bravia TVs have the best video processors in the LCD market. For Plasmas, go Pioneer or go home...

    All this TV/HD/Blueray-ass/Satelite/Cable/480/480-I/720/1080/15K.... is BS!!!!!

    I picked up a 46" Samsung from BB about a month ago....over $2K.

Some HD chanels are kick a$$ (mostly Hockey games on Fox sports net and TNT), others/most are POS...and as such are basically unwatchable.

If I hadn't had several Whiskies, the Super Bowl was basically unwatchable, (IMO...fox).....and gave me a headache.

I'm on satelite, so no local channels are HD (CBS/NBC/ABC/Fox) and look like sh#t.

Yet if I go landline/cable, I don't get the channels I really want (speed, golf, etc).....

    THUS, basically I'm PO'ed!

We can land a man on the moon, create a life in a Petri dish, correct ED, combat hair loss and augment breasts', but we can't produce a TV that looks great in all forms of provided media/broadcast resolutions.... WTF?

IMO, it's all become a game...chase the lastest technology, pay through the nose for it..... only to pay for it again (through the nose) in the next 12 months....

The second 1080 becomes the standard there will be some other technology that surpasses that and 1080 will be dead...not that 1080 is worth a crap right now anyway....sorry, I'm bitter and frustrated =)

And thats way most of my cars are old school............... most can be fixed (in a pinch) with either a screwdriver, piece of rope, crescent wrench or duct tape.

    Gotta love "old school"

Meister, satellite watchers are using their antenna to get over-the-air HD reception for local channels. My relatives have DirecTV that integrates both, enough they can use the internal DVR to record off of the antenna and satellite. Sounds like your setup is just incorrect.

But if you are finding regular HD programming unwatchable and giving you a headache, then there is either something seriously wrong with your setup, or you need to see a doctor. Seriously, not trying to be a smartass, but that shouldn't be happening at all.

In my experience, banding is where you might see a line or color, that originates from an object within an image, continues beyond the object itself, in straight lines, either horizontally or vertically. I've specifically seen this on touch panels that were passive displays (bad), as opposed to active displays (good).

banding is when a certain color is displaying (in sharp's case, blacks or dark greys, most important color in a tv), you start to notice horizontal or vertical lines. periodically, it will start to get worse. It is considered a defect of the panel itself, rather then the electronics.
