When I was just a youngster, my mum's friend always had a Ferrari in the garage. I was of course always asking questions about it/them.

One thing that stuck in my mind was that he always said your first Ferrari had to be red.

Now I know now that this is obviously not the case, is there any truth behind this at all? Perhaps dealers recommending rosso corsa as it's best for resale.. or something similiar? Or if you're not a good customer you might get punted dealer cars that will undoubtably be red etc...

Not true at all. It only holds true for those that want to buy the pre-conceived notion (myself included). Lots of happy owners have a non-red first Ferrari.

Cheers for the reply BT. I know it's not true now I am all grown up (alledgedly) my boss's first Ferrari, a 612 is black.

But wondered why this guy from the days of old said this - thought it was something that had been a victim of chinese whispers or there might be some cool story behind it. :)

Edit: to say he was basically making out as if Ferrari wouldn't let you have a non-red one, in the same way as you get chosen to buy an Enzo - if ya know what I mean.

Buy what you like. The only caution is that some of the very unusual colors are hell for resale, and if you buy a new F430 in chartreuse metallic you're going to get killed. But if you're buying used you pay slightly less going in and get slightly less selling.

I went with black metallic, probably paid $2K-$3K less, but on the 328, IMO, it's an incredible color. I'd guess the next owner will love it, too.

FWIW, I doubt red is the most popular color anymore for the newer Ferraris. Think Miami Vice. ;)

I think some of the best Ferrari colors are black and silver, and they certainly don't hurt resale value.

If you choose some really far-out color like bright blue, orange or lime green...then you can expect to not get the best price out of it when you go to resell.

Black for my first, too. Wanted a red one, but saw the black one and liked it (and it was a good car, local, well priced, etc. etc.)

I always hear "your first has to be red", but I'm happy. (Don't get me wrong, my *second* will definitely be red!!)

Black is also the color for my first Ferrari. I receive lots of comments on the black. Black on the 328 looks fantastic especially when freshly waxed and cleaned.

I did surprise my friends as they asumed I would buy a red Ferrari for my first one. When the time comes for a second it may be red.

But for now Black is it.

Not mine. I want a black or white TR/512TR. So, actually a Testanero or Testabianco. ;)

I always dreamed of having a red Ferrari. When it came time to buy I fell in love with a titanium one. Maybe the next one will be red?
