I love the sensibilities of these designers. There are lots of aspects of the F-1 transmission system that I appreciate, like not accepting a downshift when it would overrev the engine or not allowing you to select reverse at 50 MPH.

Still I thought part of the trade off in selecting an F-1 car was the inability to rev up the engine while moving. I got quick instruction on the car and I thought once you went to "N" you had to place your foot firmly on the break (coming to a stop) to engage first gear.

If you are driving a few miles per hour in town and see a nice car or nice something else, in a manual one might put in the clutch and provide a growl of appreciation. Let out the clutch and you are on your way. I thought that was impossible in an F-1. If I went to "N" I thought I would have to stop to get back in gear.

I just read the manual and I was wrong. At any time you may request "N", coast in "N" and presumably blip the throttle, then select up and the F-1 will select the best gear for your speed.

    I just love it.

i tried that doing about 60 mph on the highway.. after revving a few times i tried to select a gear but it was stuck in N.. had to coast to the shoulder and turn off the car.. i definitely would not recommend this at a high speed!

Something is not correct....as described above, if car is put into neutral, and then the upshift!! paddle engaged it will select the best suited gear for the speed you are traveling.

You don't even need to hit the upshift paddle, either paddle will put the car back in gear.

...in my experience, the gear the computer selects as "appropriate" after this maneuver is two or more gears higher than what I'd like. Kind of annoying to have to downshift two or three times to get back to where I'd like to be, but I guess that's the price for getting to hear the sweet sounds. :)

I really do not believe that you rev up in "N", or in a manual with the clutch depressed, during serious driving. Reving up the engine while in motion (unless you are downshifting) is simply for acoustic fun. I think it is neat that the F-1 can do it as can a clutch car. Try that in a turbo-hydomatic anything. I like being able to do it.

It's not clear in the manual, but do you have to hold the UP paddle for a couple of seconds for this to work?

Probably a stupid question, but I've been wondering. How do you select N in the F1, pulling both paddles simultaniously?

You just tap either paddle, don't have to hold it and it goes back into gear. As others have stated the gear selection is usually poor.
