So you may remember that I vented a while back about my recent experiences in trying to buy a 328 GTS.

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=246254

Well, the last one, I mentioned in the original post, I went to see (cash in hand), was represented as "mint" however, when I got there it had some problems starting up and running. The owner apologized for my driving 3.5 hours to see his non working car.

Now several weeks later it is out of the shop and 2 items were found to need repairing. But the owner will let me buy it as long as I pay $500 above the originally agreed upon price.

This is now the second time he has increased the price. The first time he asked for one price but later increased it after he went ahead and resprayed the seats without me asking him to(don't match rest of car now) and replacing the tires.

If I was responsible to pay to make his car work, I would rather have had my mechanic do it.

The unbelievable B&lls people have.

I think these are clear signs that he is hiding something else and you should just walk away from the car.

that owner has an inflated price of the current market value: he is just trying to get all costs associated with the price covered. He should have negotiated, after a proper PPI, a lower price and been rid of it....you, let him make the adjustments and make the car subject to his interpretation.

you will either have to buy or walk away UNLESS, doubtful, he lowers his price.

either way, lots of time to find out if neither in hurry to settle.

Now you offer him 10% less......for your wasted time and mis-matched seats. Every time he balks. Drop it again.

These are clear signals that you should dust this guy. No offense but some have an intuitive sense to not deal with people like this once things don't look right and the seller is playing games. If you're not picking up on these signals maybe the problem is you and not sensing to stay away from losers with problem cars. Start watching for the clues a little closer or hire a pro to do the work for you. Good luck and hope you find a no stories car.

Harshly worded, yet true. NEVER let someone bump you. That's a sure sign that you are seen as an easy mark by a con.

A bump in price means "Stay far away."

I once went all the way from Florida to CT (and back!) to see a car on which the price had already been agreed, subject to my inspection. The owner bumped me once when I was there, and then again after I got home. Then....told me he'd decided not to sell the car!

But there's a happy and just ending. I bought a better car for less money. And got a lesson in human nature as well.

    Jack.

    About 7,000 328s were made.

Which is not a lot, but it's more than, like, 6.

Which means you can walk away from those that annoy.

Advice: Cease all communication. If he calls, simply tell him that the deal is off. No explanation neccesary - this guy is playing you for a fool.
You are the one with the money. Walk away now. There are many many others.

328s are not a rare commodity. Keep at it until you find what you want. Any purchase is subject to a stiff PPI. As with boats, the results of the survey determine the final price. Were I selling my 575, no PPI would scare me. I know my car. Any owner should. Something is very wrong with this.

Sorry for being incomplete in my original post but I didn't want to bore every one with all the details.

After his intial try to bump up the price, I still got a discount off his first asking. Just a bit of an extra hassel in negotiating.

After his second try to bump the price I said that I will not pay $0.01 above the agreed price. He's got to be kidding if he thinks I'm paying for his repairs. In essence I walked.

He claims that there is a dealer interested in buying the car. I really don't care.

This just goes to show that some people's honor and integrity are for sale for $500.

To think he's a ceo of some company - I'd hate to think his clients have to deal with the same type of BS.

    Bassman,

Don't get too discouraged. It is pretty much par for the course with these cars. How many of us had cars sold out from under us, or drove a zillion miles to see a pile of crap. In the end, most of us it seems ended up with the car we wanted. I am really happy with all the BS I went through because I appreciate my car more every day and never second guess myself.

    GOOD LUCK!

No worries - I am done with his BS.

I should have known something was fishy with this guy / car when he told me he bought it earlier this year and has never registered it in his state. He is driving the car on the previous owner's out of state plates and has never titled it in his name. Just has a signed title and bill of sale from PO.

I would have had to jump through all sorts of hurdles just to drive it home legally.

I'm so done with this car/owner. Best wishes to the dealer/next owner that has to deal with it.

And you are all correct; there are many more out there.

    The search continues . . .

Stay tuned for a happy ending :)

Thirty...? That's how old I am and I used to watch (reruns of) Green Acres. :)

Did he ever disclose the serial number during your correspondence with him...?
