Try owning horses. I now have two which two of my daughters ride in Hunter-Jumper competition and they make Ferraris seem cheap by comparison...While a Ferrari cost you nothing while sitting in the garage, horses continue to cost you mucho dinero even when they're in the barn!

Yup, my sister was into Hunter-Jumper big time, and she had 2 horses that were worth over 200k each. She could blow several thousand dollars on one weekend event. Trailer the horses over to the arena, pay all the fees as well as her professional instructor, and then of course she always had the private catered table and the whole nine yards. Always lots of F-cars and Rolls hanging around the area as well. Very classy sport (some might go as far as to use the word "snobby"), definitely for the well healed :)

She got out of the sport after her favorite horse fell and broke it’s leg and trashed her back during a competition (I saw the whole thing go down and it was a very sad day, and no insurance). She just rides for pleasure now and I actually think she’s having more fun without the competition.

    Good luck

Perhaps one should compare the competitive horse riding to competitive Ferrari racing. The horseys may be cheaper yet. And if the horsey keeps your kid from getting bored and getting into trouble it may definitely cheaper in the long run.

Airplanes start where Ferraris end. Annual cost for a little plane like my Baron is about 50k per year. The guys with small jets start at about 200k per year, and G4s cost 2.5 Million a year to operate, if you fly it anywhere.

    Life is expensive.

On the other hand...since I bought my horses at young ages, less than 6 years old, and are providing them and my daughters with quality training and have won a few Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons , I can easily sell and double or more my money. Kinda like a Ferrari with racing history. All while providing a great sports activity for my daughters along with an opportunity for an equestrian college scholarship...I hope...

I used to be involved with race horses. I was young and thought it would be kind of neat to be involved in such a glamorous sport with such a long heritage.

Yeah, I found out real quick it ain't all the glamour you see on TV with the Kentucky Derby and all that jumping and pretty show stuff. After about a year I figured I didn't want to be involved in any sport that required me to tote a shovel.

I'll stick with the chrome stallion on the back of my car. You can keep the big smelly ones that like to bite. At least I know I won't have to chase down and catch my Ferrari because it figured out how to work the garage door and escaped.

Gwen's family has a few.. I honestly can't imagine spending so much time and money on something like this. Half of the horses they buy ultimately end up having some undiagnosed problem within the first couple of months or they end up beating the crap out of each other when they're left to pasture.

Add in transportation costs (truck, trailer), housing (stables, barn) in addition to the constant maitenence and it's just a huge headache. I'm all for replacing them with robots. ;)

I can do you one better...my wife and daughter are also heavily into the whole hunter/jumper thing...I bought a beautiful Hanovarian from Germany for my wife and then dutifully followed suit with a painted pony for my daughter...wife won a ton of firsts at the Hampton Classics and she's nuts about the sport, but I've learned over time that the horse itself (kinda like an F-car) is cheap relative to the maintenance, including boarding, vet work, trailors, and on and on...both my wife and daughter ride their heads off, so I'm actually thinking the costs are worth the thrill for the two of them.

Just when I thought the spend side of this could not get any deeper, the wife thought, "hey, as long as I love the sport as much as I do, why not do this as my business?"!...I agree after hearing about her business proposition of selling and buying horses from her contacts in Belgium and running a full-service operation, including hiring a full time trainer and groom...big mistake!

While she's still wildly passionate about her riding, being an owner is a) just as expensive if not more so in getting the business up and running with trying to snag new clients, websites, banners, signage, staff, repairs to a barn that she leases, etc, b) everyone talks about how much their horse is worth, but selling them is quite a different story and literally EVERYONE has their hand in the kitty with regard to the sale and c) I now see less of her than I did when she was simply a rider!

I do love the idea that she's about as buff as any chick could be and tan almost all year round based on the fact that she's always outside and love the fact that she's getting to live her life passion around horses, but for me, I would love to put some of that cash to work in buying F-cars and the like!

How many hrs/yr? Is that operational cost or are you including a set-aside for time scheduled maintenances? Half that for a Bonanza?

I got horse ownership out of my system in college. The woman I was engaged to at the time had 15. Everything from pure bred Egyptian Arabians to a grand daughter of Secretariat.

I agree, Ferraris are cheap compared to horses.
