Since everyone wants to tar and feather Varsha, I'll ask the same thing I did a year ago: Who do you think would make a great threesome - 2 in the booth, and 1 in the pits: I think Jeremy Clarkson and Nigel Mansell would be great in the booth 'entertaining', with Eddie Irvine roaming the pits....
You totally bogarted my idea! Oh well Mansell is too pompous and bitter IMO. Clarkson... hmmmm... I don't think he's knowledgeable enough.. too slow paced. I'd like Schumi (if he animated himself more), or Montoya and a tech guy (maybe like Gascoyne or... wait for it.... Stepney) in the booth. Irvine absolutely on the grid - no question.
Schumi would be a good addition. Clarkson, although I absolutely love his show, I think would be total rubbish. I like a little sarcasm in F1 but I think he would take it a little too far.... I think Simon Cowell would be good. hahaha no im kidding.... Honestly I can really give any good insight on this topic other than Schumi would be a good fit.
Whats wrong with Varsha? I've always like him since way back when he was calling CART races. To me he is the Peter Jennings of motorsport. Irvine in the pits would be cool. I like his WTF outlook. Jackie Stewart and Eddie Jordan would be a good paring. But I like Varsha. He always speaks from an American perspective which is good for American TV.
Clarkson says on Top Gear all the time that he isn't a big F1 fan. He is a journalist with an amazing ability to give a witty review of a road car... but that's nothing to do with being a racing broadcaster.
But you can't do that - pick someone 'If they would only be like/act like/do more...' it has to be someone as-is, today. The reaon I like Clarkson is because he doesn't take himself too seriously, and why do you think Schumi would be a good fit ? Varsha is cluelessly dramatic - go see the other thread. I didn't want to hijack that one, hence this one. Stewart is waaaay too full of himself today, he was fine in the late 70's/early 80's, but he's a bit stale today. The next problem is that whoever is chosen cannot be controversial, or the FIA would lift their credentials, that I know for fact. FISA did that in the 80's. 'Your credentials ? I cannot find them, they must be lost....'. Precisely. But I could see him roaming the pits, after an accident, cornering the suspect driver - 'That was a bloody steewpid move on your part, whats gotten into you ?' My point was, who are 3 knowledgeable people that would entertain us and not insult our intelligence ?
I've been watching all of the qualifying/races on BBC this year and they've got a great combo. It's infinitely more enjoyable than SPEED. I never knew what I was missing...
Well, maybe I mis-spoke. I think Schumi is sanitized with what he says because he is still tied in with Ferrari. Presumably if he was a commentator he would be free from those ties, and able to say whatever he damn well wanted If he was saying real stuff - telling real stories, I would want him most of all. If he was still giving PC answers to questions, then I'll take Montoya and Stepney in the broadcasting booth and Irvine on the grid. Stepney could be interchanged with Gascoyne, and Irvine could be interchanged with Paul Stoddart.
Fat chance your going to get Schumi to be a broadcaster, he makes more money sitting at home watching TV than everyone at your business combined. And Montoya, he just loves to race. He does not want to be a desk jockey.
Some people are competitive leaders by nature and have a desire to succeed. Schumi is such a person... he lives for the challenge, and has been bike racing and being in various rags and such since he left F1. Such people are not solely motivated by how much they can get paid for doing something, especially at Schumis level. Other people are not competitive leaders by nature. They live in crappy little houses and drive old crappy cars and air their beefs on the internet by taking shots at the aforementioned successful types. Hey, no problem... we check writers need check takers to earn us our $$ too
Thank you for proving my point with Schumi! As you said he lives for the challenge , bike racing every since he left F1. That is a big difference between racing and talking about it at an announcer. As for all that Blow hard info about check writer, really mean nothing don't you know that everyone here on the internet is worth 50 billion dollars and live on a private island.
Actually Stewart (although a great driver) was shot by the time he left the booth for the USA F1 broadcasts. I once heard him call a Piquet pass as it was happening and then he called it again when they did the tape replay; no lie. I have never seen a mistake that bad even by Shaheen, DeBruel, or Daly. Considering the people on the dream team would have to be available; Villeneuve in the paddock, Schumacher as the analyst, and (don't know his name) the track announcer at the Circuit Gille Villeneuve for color commentator.
If that were true, and it was about the $$, then successful but retired sportsmen would not be commentating sporting events. Except they do. It's actually a coveted job, whether they are John Madden or David Coulthard. But those guys do commentate, so it is clearly not true. Except the worker bees who live in crappy houses and drive crappy cars.
If you can remember the statement was about "Schumacher" not Madden or DC so again you are way off point as usual. As for those worker bees with crappy houses and crappy cars, who are you to insult them and their lives? Get off your high horse. You really have some serious issues that need tending to before you will be allowed back into general population..
Schumi isn't that good for such a job. He's on TV here sometimes when they're analyzing the race afterwards, and he isn't really a media guy. Not lively enough, zero emotions.
Schumi and Rory Byrne in the booth. Good technical and racing combo. Down in the pits I'll take any really hot babe. She would be good to look at and the drivers would all be begging to talk to her and actually spill some info.
