I miss Murray Walker. I also miss James Hunt....those two were a great pairing. I used to hear them on TSN in Canada.

2002 USGP, MS braking at the s/f line and RB taking the win in the shortest (I think at the time) margin of victory. That caused quite a stir.

Besides the RB win I posted earlier, my next favorite was the first time I attended a F1 race. Indy 2002. The moment I remember most was not part of the race but the first time I heard an F1 car live and in person. Just as I got out of my car outside the track I heard one go by inside.

    Oh-My-God

I don't care WHAT kind of system you have at home. You'll never really appreciate it until you hear it for real.

First USGP, the first time I saw and heard a Ferrari F1 come around the rear corner combo onto the back straight - I sat on the berm cheering as the tearing scream of the Ferrari rent a rift straight into the fabric of my passionate soul.

And my early inspiration, the ultimate ever, any era, any form of motor racing:
Gilles and Rene, Ferrari and Renault, France

Last years Melbourne GP, every one was questioning the new ferrari coz it hadnt performed that well in pre season tests. me and a few other ferrari supporters were sitting in the first corner with wthe williams and mclaren supporters, they kept telling us that ferrari was finished & no good. it was the first practise session and all of the cars had gone out and set a time.

Schumy waited till the end of the session, he came out did the installation lap completed his first hot lap of the weekend and smashed the course record. It was truly breathtaking. All the williams and mclaren supporters didnt say a word for the rest of the day.

    J. Villeneuve vs M. Schumacher (Portugal 1996) (one of the greatest moves on Schumacher ever seen)

    J. Villeneuve vs M. Schumacher (Jerez 1997) JV overtook MS and won the championship.

Hakkinen vs M. Schumacher (SPA 2000) Zonta was caught up in sandwich. Brilliant stuff from Mika.

MS first win in F1 (SPA 1992)

MS first win with Ferrari (Spain 1996) Absolutely dominant in the wet

MS wins the championship for Ferrari (Suzuka 2000)

There's many more I would like to add...

Gilles Villeneue and Rene Arnoux, Dijon, 1979. What a battle.

British GP, 1996, I was sitting at Club corner when Spoonface's engine let go right in front of all of us as we cheered on Damon Hill and Jacques; I still love Ferrari but I can't stand MS.

San Marino GP, 1994. Living in San Diego, up at 4AM to watch the race, and saw the crash that took Ayrton Senna. Saw it live as they pulled Senna from his car and blood spilled from the edge of his visor; that was edited from the repeat on cable later that morning. I will never forget that.

Agreed! That one was memorable. His pass of Senna to win the Hungarian GP in '89 was also a good one.

The first GP of any kind I attended was Watkins Glen '75 (not exactly "modern") and the first F1 car I ever saw in person was Regazzoni's 312T sitting in the garage with its airbox/cockpit cover off the car. I was amazed how small the car was!

That's the best battle ever. :) Too bad I wasn't born to see it live. I didn't put it in my post because he asked modern F1.

Ayrton Senna was in a class of his own that day. He qualified something like 1.5 seconds faster than Alain Prost in equal machinery. Now 1.5 secs gap is a huge amount considering that the overall lap would have taken something like 1 min 18 secs (guesstimate). Note, Professor Prost was no push-over - he was certainloy one of the fastest in his time.

This was the day which Senna "The Philosopher" gave his famous comment:

"At a given day and a given circumstance, you think you have a limit. And you then go for this limit, and you touch the limit, and you think "okay, this is the limit". As soon as you touch this limit, something happens in you so that you can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct and your experience as well, you can fly very high"

Ayrton felt that he was in a elevated spiritual zone during the qualifying laps where he was as much a passenger as a driver. He was in the grip of something great that motivated such an awesome lap. Fearful that further provoking his limits on the race track would be tempting fate, he immediately stopped.

I agree wholeheartedly. It was one of the best days in my life. Though looking back now, I wish I could have been at a racetrack in the early 90s when the Ferrari V12s raced. Or be there in the 60s when the V16 BRM, V12 Ferraris, Lotus DFV v8s raced.

That run to the first corner was one of my favorite moments too. I still don't get why Hill went from a top team to a backmarker in the year of his title defense. Senna winning Brazil in 1993 was special to me in hindsight not knowing it would be his last win.

I think you are talking about Jerez 1997.

    My most memorable moments:
    1) Monza 2002 - A Ferrari 1-2-3 on the podium with Schumacher, Barrichello, and Irvine on the podium. Alright, Irvine was a Jaguar driver at the time, but we all treated him as 'one of us'. They had just built a new podium which extends over the track so I was in the throng below it for the celebrations. Afterwards I was lucky enough to have my picture taken with Eddie's trophy as I was camping with his parents. The picture below show's Eddie's mother, my mate Andy, and myself.
    2) Memorable - probably Imola 1994 :(
    3) Eddie winning the Australian GP in 1999 for Ferrari. Of course later that year Michael broke his leg and it looked like Eddie could really become world champion. Unfortunately team orders in France meant that Eddie gave Michael 5th and thus lost the Championship for Ferrari and we had to wait another 12 months.
    4) The Austrian GP of 2002 was memorable for all the wrong reasons. The Ferrari team introduced team orders far too early in the season and in doing so ruined Ruben's championship chances. A day when I wasn't proud to be a Ferrari fan.
    5) Michael's amazing drive in Spain in 1996. That car did not deserve to win!

Sorry I just thought of another one. The 92 Monaco GP. I know many people haven't seen it and i'm lucky enough to have it on a dvd, gotta love ebay, lol, but the last 10 laps or so are fantastic. As big a fan as i was of Senna's, you could not help but be impressed by Mansell, he put in something like 10 fastest laps in a row to catch him but could not pass him. The effort was such that Mansell's legs were buckling on the podium. Very memorable stuff.

Being lucky enough to be at Long Beach when Gilles Villenueve won.
Memorable but not good was actually seeing the wheels fly higher than a telephone pole when Regazzoni crashed and was paralyzed at Long Beach.
Being at Phoenix for Alesi's first race when he finished fourth.
Not memorable to you guys but fun for me was meeting Ron Dennis at Monaco in the 80's and asking him about Gordon Murray ("yes, he is definitely a genius" he said seeming a little annoyed that I was more interested in Murray than anything else.....like him).
Being at Indy for Hakkinen's last win and getting to meet him in the team trailer (with Ron Dennis again).
The most memorable is Villenueves death, more so than Senna's for me.

It's actually very hard to fix a nascar race on a superspeedway. Damned near impossible. If you say, wanted to back off for someone to let then win you'd lose so much momentum it would be really obvious you were doing it. i don't buy that the race was fixed. DEI was always good at Daytona and had dominant cars and Dale Jr knows how to get around that place. The idea is highly doubtful with all the money on the line.

1994 Spanish GP... MS coming in 2nd while having only 5th gear for most of the race. It was a drive that I can never forget.
