The son (20 something) of my next-door neighbor has been admiring my cars for some time. He comes over a lot to chat (total hunk - so I didn't mind). Just now he saw my Ferrari for the 1st time & asked to drive it in the same sentence where he asked me to dinner. I politely turned down the dinner due to relationship issues & struggled w/ “nobody drives my car”.
What do you say to these outrageous people who want to take it for a spin when you need to be "nice"?

The more direct way would be "F. O.!! cristal clear and not to be mis understood! BTW I have a ferrari too... want to have dinner with me?

Take him for a spin, but make sure you're in the driving seat!

Anyone who asks to drive my car will never be allowed to drive my car, it's just plain rude for someone to ask something like that imo. In your case if you want to be polite about it, I would say that "nobody drives it, but me."

I enjoy letting people drive my car (while I sit next to them) but I have never had anyone actually ask me, I have always offered. Somehow asking seems a bit foward. I'd decline that.

I happily give people rides and have let strangers drive my car many times. It's a car... share the love.

I don't let anyone drive my 308 unless I know from personal experience that they can drive a stick. My 2 best friends (also car buffs) and my uncle have driven my car because I trust them. A valet at the Breakers Hotel has also driven it. While I am selective about who drives it (with the exception of the valet), I would not let a 20 year old neighbor drive it. I would not be offended if he asked, but I would politely say, "No way you punk!! GEt the F away from me..." Just kidding. I have actually said "She's my baby and I don't let anyone drive her but me, sorry."

I don't think it's rude that he asked, though. I would have asked at that age too. Take him for a ride...an exciting ride. He will love it.

You would love to, but the Insurance Co forbids anyone under 25 from driving the car.

    Yes,

I think the insurance angle is a graceful way out.

"Sorry, but my insurance company won't allow it" and move on to something else.

I have actually found this a great ice breaker with women. No kidding. The guy girl ratio is about 15:1 in the people it attracts when I am out in it. On the rare occasion, and if she is really cute, I offer to let her drive it. This doesn't happen very often but it does occure. A few years ago I actually dated someone I met that way the whole summer she was home from school.

You gotta do what you gotta do sometimes...

I really do enjoy watching how thrilled people get over this. Last weekend I was changing sparkplugs in it out in my driveway when a nice young couple stopped by. The guy had been thinking of buying a 308/328 but did not really know much about them. We had a nice conversation. When I was finished I asked him if he would like to drive it around the block with me (I needed to anyway to check things out) You would have thought he hit the lottery. We ran it down the street and back and he must have thanked me a thousand times. I guess it's my way of paying back to all the owners that had to deal with me as a kid in parking lots with THEIR Ferraris.

While he may have a crush on your car, I get the feeling you have a little crush on him ;)

The mere fact that you're considering this and are attracted to him means that the possibility of him driving it is very good, if he knows how to pull it off.

Let us know how the drive went!

Man...images of the gardener and Gabrielle on Desperate Housewives. Maybe let him drive the car and he trims the hedges.

I have not had anyone ask to drive. That's kinda uncomfortable. But he is young. I do let some people drive mostly for business.

I've seen this question posted here before.

Although, this may not exactly apply in your case, the best response (I thought) was the poster who responded. "Why don't you just ask me if you can F my wife?".

If someone ASKED me to let them drive it, I would probably tell them, "No, but I would be glad to take you for a ride in it." On the other side of the coin, I have let numerous people drive my car -- but none of them has asked, and all were very suprised and grateful. More than one of them purchased their own Ferrari later.
