You’re wealthy and can time travel back to pick one year to go new car shopping. What year and what would you buy?

(To drive, not a pure $$$ return exercise…)

    I might do 1973:

Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Spyder - Even better than the GTB/4, modern but timeless and the best interior ever put in a car. Any color but I’d order blue/tan.
Porsche 911 RS 2.7 - Definitive sports car. Make mine light yellow.
Lamborghini Miura SV - Better than the Countach, sorry, it just is. Orange? Maybe…

Same year - 1973 but I would buy a 4 speed super duty Trans Am in red.

One of the first cars I liked, before I could drive, was an older ( 20-something) friend’s ‘77 Camaro LT in black. Chrome trim on the tail. By ‘78 or so GM had ruined it with plastic.

Buy a fully loaded Buick Grand National with T-Tops. Buy a GNX, swap all the GNX parts, badges, wheels, etc to the T-Top body. Have the only T-Top GNX. Since you said it was not for investment purpose, otherwise I wouldn't butcher a GNX.

1985 would be the year and I would buy a brand new 308 and keep it forever. Would also buy a new Mustang GT.

I want to be dropped down around October 1970, that way I’ll have some early ‘71s I can toss in the mix…..;)

On balance, I'm just about leaning to 2003 as simply there's more variety. Certainly I wouldn't be upset with a collection consisting entirely of 1997 or 2003 cars!

The more I think of it, 2003 may just have been the best year of cars full stop. For me they've got a perfect balance between performance, looks, noises, practicality and comfort.

I've taken value completely out of the consideration, these would all be forever cars. I'd have stuck a Lotus Elise series 1 in there but I really don't fit and since this is about cars to drive...well it falls off.

I think around 1967. I'd get me a 250 SWB, a Lancia Fulvia Super Sport Zagato, a nice alfa 105 GTA Stradale, and maybe even a 911E.

Then again fast forward about 20 years to 1985 or so and I could get me a 288 GTO, a BMW M1 and an M5. I'd be happy with those too.
