Toronto has been dealing with some pretty ugly weather. It has been a lot of "white out" conditions, low visibility, drifting snow, ice, and more. This past Sunday was ice/freezing rain. Needless to say I'm ready for bed... 8:30 PM- flight #1 cancelled 11:10 PM - Flight #2 is delayed 2:30 AM - Arrive into Halifax 3:00 AM - Shuttle to Hotel (rental car closed) 3:45 AM - Sleep attempt 1. 4:00 AM - Fire Alarm 4:30 AM - Attempt #2 at sleep. 5:00 ISH AM - > 7:00AM alarm for work.
Snow/ice mix, everyone is deicing and the runways have to be plowed and treated. At our best, we do 120 aircraft an hour. In heavy snow we're around 25-30, so 60% of evening flights either have to be pushed back to whenever there's a lull in scheduled flights, or cancelled outright. I always suggest people fly out of YYZ in winter from 0800-1300, for this exact reason.
Fun times today. The Emirates 380 lost an inboard engine on the way in, so had to land on 33R (our mid-field, very much in-the-way-of-everything runway). Of course, because they couldn't use the reversers, they rolled long. It shut down the operation on the north runway (23) as a result. I love being aboard that flying apartment block, but despise working it. It doesn't fit anywhere and causes us nothing but problems.
