    they aren't even the same shape. Not even close. The only similarity, if you can even call it that, is that the angle-up on the insides.

    I get the 'feel' of where the OP is going. Though some will disagree, I too see a basic generic shape of rear lamp on ze German karz. It's not verbatim, however it's a basic shape expanded upon.

    Put another way, it's like the Porsche 911. Since 1963, Porsche has used the same basic shape, no deviation from design and not exactly alike.

    even the 997.2 had a similar trapezoidal tail light design.

    I think, much like the LED running lights, it's just the trend and not some nefarious German plot.

    I see exactly what you mean. I actually had a friend comment the other day that the taillights of the new Passat are the same as the taillights on the new Audis.
