Did a search first, but could not find this. Can someone familiar with this technology please comment? Thanks - DM ----------------------------- Getting Rid of Your Cable TV You don't need to spend $100 a month any more... mostly. Posted by Paul Hochman on Friday, May 1, 2009 10:26 AM Dear Paul: I have been told you can connect your TV to your computers online service and get rid of cable. Is that possible? I would like to save some money. Sonwolf Dear Sonwolf: Do you want to save over $1000 a year? Then get rid of your cable. Yep, youll be giving up a lot local news, high school football (maybe), town meeting broadcasts. But thanks to a website called Hulu (which is free), and a piece of hardware Amazon sells called the ZV Box at (check it out at zeevee.com), you can officially cut the $100/month cable cord and watch thousands of shows and any other video available on the web. Heres how you do it. Connect a ZV box to your computer (yes, the box costs $400, but only once there are no fees). The ZV box turns your computers information into an actual HD TV stream a new HD TV channel, which your TV picks up. Voilá! Now, using your ZV remote control, go anywhere on the web to watch any video content. And thanks to a service called to Hulu.com, you can now watch entire shows from NBC, Disney, News Corp (no CBS yet), and, if you want to browse, to any other web site with content you can find on the web. Examples of current available shows from ABC/Disney alone include "Lost," "Grey's Anatomy," "Desperate Housewives," "Private Practice," "Ugly Betty," and "Scrubs." There are also episodes of The Office, Family Guy, The Daily Show, and many others. All free. Go figure.
You're better off just buying a cheap laptop and hooking it to your TV. Also, the Xbox can do this feature. I have an LG Blu Ray player and it streams Netflix movies. They're working on adding hulu also. If you're really into movies, you may want to check this box for $99. http://www.roku.com/default.aspx
