I am using 20/50 Castrol GTX, supposedly most of the zinc has been removed what about this? http://www.castrol.com/castrol/genericarticle.do?categoryId=82915470&contentId=7032644 Rob
I like it but being a synthetic you should make sure you have no leaks first, when I put it in my Dino it leaked even worse, luckily going back to GTX caused the leaks to go back to what they were
How bout this with the 20/50 Castrol GTX Dino? I really dont want to use syn either. There was an article in Prancing Horse last month about this...... Dont want to ruin my camshafts!!!!!!! http://www.zddplus.com/ My car uses 11-12 quarts of oil with a new filter.... Rob
i use RedLine, Bradd Penn ( when i can get it ) or use off the shelf oil and add BG MOA additive to the oil.
Guys, 308s do not leak PROVIDED your car/engine is in proper order. If your car leaks you have a problem that needs to be addressed. i used 0W/40 and tracked the car and had no leaks. Do not blame the oil, blame the condition of your car. As for ZDDP, USE IT or get additive. Perhaps do a mix of normal synth/dino and RedLine.
I'll bet a lot of 308 owners are already quite conscious of the ZDDP issue. My 308 gets Red Line. The Esprits get Valvoline VR1 Racing or Brad Penn. A good filter goes a long way, too . . .
All my cars get ZDDP, well all the old ones anyway. I am firm believer that the new oil formulations don't have enough ZDDP unless you get specialty oils like Motul or other specialty oils like http://www.classiccarmotoroil.com/ but I don't like this one for the Dino because it only comes in 15-40wt. My Dino is getting old, it needs that 50wt to maintain its oil pressure I would prefer the 15wt when starting up but I noticed a slight oil pressure drop when it was hot with 15-40wt. I may put this in the Dino after it gets rebuilt as I usually have it handy for another car. I spoke with the Motul guy at Laguna Seca in August and plan on throwing that in on my next oil change and see how it does, it has ZDDP. Motul has a pretty rep in Europe. I know, I know, you can't really tell until you tear it apart after many 10's of 1,000's of miles but I have personally seen damage to camshafts with no obvious explanation except ZDDP meaning they were properly assembled, properly run in and never run low on oil or overheated. I also realize ZDDP is like religion or politics, what works for me, others will say is snake oil, well its my snake oil and I will keep using it because whatever it is I am doing works for me.
When Mobil changed their 0W-40 from ZDDP to lower ZDDP my lab UOA showed some increased situations. Changed oils to 'German' Castrol 0W-30 and no problems on next analysis. Simply my experience with the 308.
I switched to Valvoline from Castrol because of the change ZDDP 2 years ago. I posted the change in several threads, but all I got for the effort was lower vis is better than higher. My point was/is we need the ZDDP more than flow in flat tappet engines. Castrol recognized this with their Syntec 20w50 for classic's. But that product has dried up also. One more point when I called Castrol and they directed me to their Syntec product I was told by the rep to make sure the Label said for Classic Cars as earlier 20w50 Syntecs did not have enough ZDDP.
