Since I do not smoke, generally I call a cigarette lighter a power outlet. Some people are also turned off by the word cigarette.

The cigarette lighter is there. All my previous cigarette lighters had a bigger handle on them. This handle is a fairly flat knob that looks like a rotary switch. It is in a row of rotary switches that control climate. Exactly where Malcolm said it might be. So unfortuniately I ignored it thinking it was some type of climate control. All my cigarette lighters in the past were very obvious; therefore I was looking for something very obvious with a bigger handle. I thought I would figure out climate controls when I needed them.

Am at work waiting for some computer tests to run. While waiting, I went out and checked on it. Sure enough the cigarette lighter was there - it just looked like something else. Appears to be standard American, but do not have anything with me to test it with.

Ferrari red interiors fade and the previous owner put in a new red interior. One thought I had was that he might have eliminated the cigarette lighter since many people are turned off by smoking. Also like drink holders, a cigarette lighter might have been eliminated in the planning. Do not know since this is my first Ferari.

Was asking since I will take a small trip this weekend. Wanted to have the built in radar detector working or the V-1 working. Now that I know what that control is for, it will be much easier.

So was the cigarette lighter (which you say was removed) also in the same area? (and now just a blank space?)
Interesting that you say it's "American". I know that the US TR and US 308-2V are that more petite (BMW) plug/socket style (but those are '84 and earlier models). Since we've got "power outlets" in the title why don't some other Owners/Users post year/model/version + power socket style (assuming it's not been changed) if you know it just to have some info.

Thanks everyone for your input.

In this case it was my error.

The power outlet is there and appears to be American.

It had a plug/cover that is flatter than the standard American.

It is in the same row as the climate controls and has a red plus green circles around it. Being a cab, I thought I would read about the climate controls later. So I ignored everything to do with climate controls. That third climate control turned out to be the power outlet.

OK, first mistake since 1998 :-))

Dave do you have the old euro style lighter in your 89? (A hole that you would drop a cigarette into I would surmise...I don't smoke 'em.) I had the same in my 89 and replaced with the US spec lights from the 92 parts catalog.

Dave,
All cars as far as I can remember were fitted with a cigarette lighter - it was fitted in the centre consol behind the switch that operates the radio aerial. The wiring should run from the fuse box down through the dash and along the centre consol.

I'd be very surprised if your F model didn't (at least originally) have an aux. power outlet -- check the OM for location (usually described/shown somewhere in the "general specifications" or "running instructions" type-sections).
On my TR -- it's in the glovebox;
On my-ex 308 -- it's sort of under the dash on the LH side;
On your Mondial? -- I don't have a clue!

Mine does not have a power outlet or cigarette lighter (89 Mondial t cab).

The previous owner did have the interior redone.
Could it be covered up or taken out?

Where would it normally be?
And where is the wiring normally?

Thanks!

If you want to match your existing aux. +12V power outlet (even though it may be hidden), this post from Brian Faherty give an indication that BMW motorcycles use the same F-style male/female connectors:

Dave
In the UK we tend to utilise the cigarette lighter, either leaving it as is or putting a power outlet in its place. It has a 20 amp fuse rating so be careful if your going to load the wiring beyond that (coffee pot!)

Sometimes 12v power outlets come in handy for things like V1, GPS, small coffee pot, martine (sp) maker, etc.

Was going to try to figure out how to put one in this weekend. Want it to look very professional or to be hidden.

Any suggestions? Has anyone done this?

How does one get behind the center consoles? Any easy way?

Thanks!
