i posted on some earlier thread the solution i've used for yrs & works well/easily:

* use the socket you currently have but fold over a plastic grocery bag several times, then put it up against the lug bolt and slide socket on over it. This will protect the bolt from scratches & nicks, while still allowing enough torque to do the job.

Can also use plastic sandwich bags, thick paper, etc., etc. instead of grocery bag, just need sumpin' in between the bolt & socket.

Snap-On and Ozat both offer aluminum-lined sockets for chromed/decorative applications -- see:

(The OZAT link has changed to: http://www.ozat.co.il/asg/Item_207.html)

(The plastic inserts also require using a 6-point socket, not a 12-point -- ask me how I know )

I haven't tried the plastic lined sockets but everytime I work on mine I always say I'm going to use the Dremel tool and relieve the socket where it touches the top outside corners of the wheel bolts. Touching the bolt near the middle/bottom should keep the chrome on -- or at least make the damage where it doesn't show...

Has anyone tried the plastic lined sockets
for removing wheel bolts. I wonder if the
plastic liners allow enough torque to be applied
to the bolts and if sets available have enough
outside clearance to allow insertion in the openings around the outside of the bolts.
Currently using standard deep well metric socket
w/ ratchet for removal and torque wrench to re-install. Recommndations/sources welcomed.
