Rob,
I dont know what sort of job you are looking for but IBM has a pretty good selection in the Austin area if you are interested in stay in Texas. We are in the process of hiring around 4600 more in the US over the next year so chances are good you can get in. If you want spruce up the resume and send it to me I will gladly get it to the HR people that are looking for people down there.

My feedback to you is that you need to definately make yourself sound more important in the jobs you worked. It looks as though you just kind of participated in the jobs you have instead of making a difference. What I always look for in good resumes is not so much what position you held but exactly what you did in that position that set you apart from all the other monkeys, and one can usually extrapolate from there how you will benefit ones company. Lay the facts on the line, if you lead a team that contributed to Sprint making/saving 6 million state it.

Anyway just some feedback. I know we are sending jobs offshore and of course it blows ass, but in most cases we were just finance, accounting and some software test teams for the most part...IBM still beleives a little in the Americas ability to inovate, which is something you dont always get with $15 dollar an hour employees in India.

Oh yeah my job is in software...WebSphere and DB2 mainly but really the industry as I do lots of presentations

P.S. Lose the table from your resume...it just looks out of place.

Actually, Rob, my 2 cents and change is to take any layoff as a sign that you need to go out and do your own thing. You're young. Your wife will graduate soon. You don't have any kids. Remember starvation is a great motivator. Besides, peanut butter morning, noon, and night ain't so bad. There's worst.

Robin - you're exactly right. Always tie in a monetary or time/efficiency benefit to your different work roles/responsibilities and experience.

Does your company use Six Sigma? Lots of great metrics to be had there.

One point that is probably obvious to you: don't have "Summary" at the top - too generalized and potentially vague; instead, I would suggest a unique "Objective" for each targeted company. Avoid the appearance of a mass-mailing.

Also make the formatting consistent.

Good luck - really hope you don't get "offshored".

Rob,

Just skimmed your resume.. There's plenty of information in there, but I think it's missing the key ingredient... how did your efforts benefit the companies/projects you worked for?

For instance, in the section that describes your role as a senior software engineer at Sprint, it says you were a project manager for such and such.. tech lead for something or other, etc. In my experience, the key to a winning resume is to tie what you did in your role as PM directly to a benefit (usually monetary) to the company.

A better line would be something like "As the project manager for 3 development and enhancement projects, I implemented SystemABC and XYZ, which helped complete the project on time and under budget by $1.5M"

So what you have is your role (PM on 3 projects..note specific number), what you did (implemented various systems), and how that helped the company (completed project on time and saved money..again a specific amount). Without these elements, resumes end up looking more like a job description.

Hope you survive the cuts!

Rob,
Come to Colorado. We have some sweet tracks, including PPIR and Second Creek Raceway. Plus there is some killer cycling and plenty of triathlons, if you want to do tri's. We also have some great sports teams and one of the best performing arts centers in the country.

Oh wait. You said you needed a job? I don't know if we have any of those. However, if you do come out here, don't tell anyone you're from Texas.

Rob,
The Ferrari club here in the northwest is very active with many activities planned and unplanned. Many shows like the Kirkland Concours, numerous Italian festivals and the Northwest Historics, (Childrens Hospital Benefit) race on the weekend of July 4th.

The Cascade mountains and proximity to Canada also provide excuses to go looking for windy mountain roads. Also drives through wine country.

It's been a great summer with these guys. There are still activities during the rainy season too.

It's beautiful here during the summer, but as you can imagine, rainy and wet the other 8 months. Microsoft seems to be always hiring for BA's or PM's...just pick your product group. How 'bout XBOX and working on the latest car games which will include F-cars? Just a thought...

Keep your fingers crossed...look at it as you being more valuable than the 80% who are already gone (that says a lot actually). All it takes is being better than a few more folks.

Its like the old story. If you and a friend are being chased by a bear, you don't to outrun the bear...you only have to run faster than your buddy.

Worse case scenario, you get laid off...and the good people are not staying on the market very long these days. Look at it as a potential vacation not having to worry about the work stacking up on your desk while you are gone :-)

Chris,

Yes, I was going to email you next week after they announce the 90% laid off and 10% that will be retained. I've already made it through 50% cuts the past 2 years, so I doubt my luck will hold out to be 10%. I'm not that good. Look how much I'm on FC. The 10% they are keeping are Project Managers and only the best of the technical SME's. Don't know where BA's will end up on that list.

David,

One reason for my long list is I'm not an expert in any one technical area. I've always known a little bit about everything. I think that's good for a business analyst, PM, or team lead.

Rob,
Since I do this for BA's all the time, we can get your resume all nice and shiny if you want. No need to pay somebody $hundreds...its really not worth it. I would be driving an Fcar right now if I charged somebody that much everytime I work on a resume.

Shoot me an email when you get a chance. I am looking for a few BA's right now (don't know if the positions are a match for you, but who knows.)

Robs Resume:

Summary:
I would tailor this to the job at hand and move it to cover letter.

I like how you have the experience done. Shows consitent promotion and responsibility increase over at Sprint. I don't like that part about 80 applications in the last 8 months. That just makes my BS detector go off. Try rewording that sentence somehow.

Theres no mention of dollar figures...... When I read sometihng for project mangement I'd like to see that the project was substantial. Shows responsibility. If someone else trusted you with 2 million bucks that tells me someithing.

Education

MBA first. Cetificate last.

Any certifications? PMP?

That big table is bad. I would never read through it.

If the job is for a web developer. TELL ME HOW YOU used (XXX technology) to make me money in the cover letter. Demonstate the ability to think in terms of profit and loss.

IMO only H1-B body shops focus on the laundry list of skills anymore.

FYI:

I am big on cover letters. A well formed letter shows me a lot more then a list of expert skills ever will. I have poor grammer and I admit it. If a cover letter has grammer that is worse then mine in the shredder the resume goes.

I sell cars-at this time Audi in particular.

Need an RS6 or S4?????? Let me know.

Have done this since 1981 and held every position in the dealership except owner. Sales, used car manager, new car manager, general sales manager and general manager. I have learned you still have to wear all the hats no matter what your job title is. I was out detailing new car deliveries and mopping restrooms as a general manager. If it needs it to make your business successful, you need to do it. I am now back on the straight sales end. I will let someone else have the management headaches, at least for a while. Oh, the last three years before Audi was at Ferrari of Dallas----Yea, it was a lot of fun.

Yes, please give me plenty of feedback. Don't be nice, I can take it.

My job is a little safer as I work closely with our internal customers. Coders and DBA's are now called commodities by most large company execs. Why pay someone $80k a year when someone in India will do the same commodity job for $15 an hour.

The market for IT people with small and medium size companies is growing though. I'll probably end up in a smaller company.

I also manage students, teach seminars, fix servers, write propsals, whatever needs done.

But I would argue that I have the best job on the planet. Good people, resonably dedicated staff. Hands off bosses(both a good and bad thing)
