Ben, is it possible to do 128 on the way up? If it's a loop, why can't we do it in the other direction?

Vincent: keep it at 7.45. Better we show up early than miss it. With a group going, it's possible we end up late.

Ok,

So far I called a few places, and I found a perfect Ferrari friendly place (read good parking). 7:45 dinner reservations at Bistro Don Giovanni's in North Napa about 35 minutes from Fosf. The food is very good as well. Ben's route has us in Napa around 7, so I'll try and get us an earlier time. Let me know what you guys think.

Looks good, thanks for the map Ben!

i would think I'd meet you guys around sebastopol, given the route on the map.

I know a few good (nice) places around the Napa Valley. Let's have a head count and I can make some calls and see about parking and a reservation. It's Harvest time up here and things are pretty booked, but things happen when you call and say ferraris are showing up.

The drive from 128 over the hill into the valley is a lot of fun, not so fast, but tests the handling! I like it a lot.

Faisal- we're going to go UP via Highway 1, but are coming BACK through 128!

Your buddy is RIGHT ON, 128 is one of the best roads I have ever driven!

Smooth, tight, and FAST! (hitting 100 many times.)

Dan- AFAIK, no planes, though signs claim they're in use (yeah, right). Never even heard a story involving one.

Best!

Tony: were you in Santana Row with a brunette a few nights back? I was walking around and said 'sweet Dino' or something to that effect. The driver gave me a dirty look - no clue why. It was a blood red w/ tan interior?

Ben,
please make sure you incorporate Rte. 128 into the route...

Here's a cut/paste from a friend of mine on the local Lotus list:

it sounds like the drive will start in Mill Valley (F of SF); which means the drive will take the same route as the ones I mentioned last week that we will take 101N and exit to 128W (or 123W)at the town of Cloverdale. 128W will get us to Hwy 1, but it is 55 miles of great great windy road with high speed sections and thru a redwoods forest on 128W. Also, I only came across no more than 6 cars in the entire 55 mile length of 128W.

guys, I can't make this drive to the north. But one to the south or in the south bay is good for me when you are ready.

I haven't been on such a drive, but I think it's going to be fun. I had a black testarossa pull up behind me/Dino today on 237 and we were having fun weaving in and out of traffic before he zoomed off. I can just imagine 5-10 F cars screaming down the 101...

Hello Daryl, hope you can join us with your beautiful redhead. It's looking like 9am this Sunday. We meet at FoSF and head North, towards Mendocino.

Looks like a couple of P-cars, 4 Lotus Esprits, and possibly an Exige will be joining us as well.

Best,

Faisal- no worries! I would like to do the SJB run myself soon. Stay with us as long as you can!

From Ferrari of SF, it's about 3hr:45min to Mendocino (at normal-people speed) and just a little less coming back via 128.

So, we could be back at FoSF at 5pm for very early dinner at Piati's right next door, or linger down through the Napa Valley, and tack on 2-3 more hours, maybe do dinner there (Vincent, any suggestions?)

What do you all think?

Here is the route overview so far, with the back-by-5pm version.

I will print up full turn-by-turn directions for everyone to hand out at FoSF!

Just spoke to Art...let's save the SJB run for next time and go north this weekend. I will turn around at the time I need to, you guys carry on. We need as many radar detectors as possible.

Ben, can you get the scenic twisties route mapped out, pls?

So, 9am FoSF. OK?

Sorry to throw a wrench in repeatedly.

South run to SJB sounds good to me, it'll be a more half-day type of thing (I'll get you guys into the all-day run gradually :D)

Did some google searches, definate bonous photo ops for F-cars in SJB! Bring shorts!

Wow - I had no idea the Mendocino thing runs in through the whole day.

So is the north route set? Are we going south? Let's get some clarity on the situation.

Art- even better! Means lunch at noon instead of 1pm :D)

Mendocino's not exactly dead, but it's not jumping either. It's more of an outpost type of thing I would say. Big tourist town, lots of charm. (and much of it's appeal is to drive those roads too, I won't lie!)

Dan- Oooh! Intresting alternative, I've never been to San Juan Batista. That's more inland right? They've got a mission I know, that could be pretty cool to see and photograph. Got any pics?

Guys? What's your pleasure? I'm up for either one!

Best!

OK, guys...
San Juan Batista is definitely more appealing to me. I went there two years ago and have always wanted to go back. This destination caters to both groups, those who want to drive a fair distance, and those who want to have something to do and see upon arrival.

There's really nice rustic Mexican restaurants (with chickens running around), steak houses, and regular stuff at SJB. There's lots of historic buildings and a really nice farm from the 1800's which has been turned into a museum where you can see how people lived and worked. Really great selection of farm machinery and blacksmith stuff too (sorry, no Lambos).

Here's the place I had lunch at...

Upload

Here's a pic of the main street:

Upload

There's also hills behind SJB with really good driving roads.

I would definitely prefer this. You take 101 South, past the Laguna Seca exit, and then East for a bit. If we do it, a good meeting point would be the parking lot at the Black Mountain Road exit off 280 Southbound. It comes up about 15 mins south of San Francisco (at least, at my speeds it does).

So, what do you guys say? Gather off 280 S at 9am Sunday for this??

Dan- I've got a good land route all set. 101 North to River Road to 1.

Then return on 128 West into Healdsburg, tool down 101 if we're running late, or keep on 128W untill we're in Calistoga, then take
Silverado Trail (as fast as 19 and HUGELY more senic!)

On the route, haven't yet picked a dinner place. Any thoughts guys?

We could shoot for something in Healdsburg around 5:30 (a tad early) or Napa (around 6:30-7) or tool on into the city right around 8pm. <traffic?> I did the Corneilan Room in SF recently, cool, but a tad stuffy. Any other good dinner places 50 stories up to watch the sun set over the city?

How about a breakfast stop at or shortly after the 9am rondevous at SFO? ART: where at SFO would you like to meet?

Best!

As for the route: it looks to be ~2 hours north of FoSF by regular driving, which means we're at ~1.30h taking it pretty easy. I think that's perfect.

I have two older Talkabouts and a V1. Anyone else?

A 9am start out of SFO would be perfect!

Faisal and Dan- I did all the times from the South Bay for our wine-country challenged friends :D)

Acording to Mapquest, it's actually 3 hours, 14min from South SF to Mendocino. Although that is the inland route via 128, so going up 1 will tack on another hour or two, depending on when we cut over. If we wait untill Jenner to cut over to the coast, Mendocino is only 2hrs north of Jenner. (and Jenner is again 2 hrs on the dot north of South SF... Got all that? Right...)

Here's the inland route, I can't get mapquest to do the coastal route all in one fell swoop. http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.adp?go=1&do=nw&1n=San+Francisco&ct=NA&1y=US&1a=&1c=South+San+Francisco&1s=CA&1z=&1ah=&2y=US&2a=&2c=Mendocino&2s=CA&2z=&2ah=

I think this would be a good one to pass out maps before we take off, I'll print 'em up and jot down meeting times.

Hrm, maybe we should come UP via 128, do lunch, and then tool back down 1 at our leisure? (but this leaves the early-outs with a bit less senic trek up 101. Can go faster though! I'll let my gears grind on that for a little while.

V1s and a few FRS radios, and we'll be all set. Maybe Art or my buddy Jon could provide close air support as well (muscle any CHP choppers out of the area. Then again, those things top out at a mere 90knots...)

Dan- shotgun seat open?

Kuzi- Wish you could come! Can't leave a tape recorder in the seminar and bail with that stunning girl 'friend with benefits' of yours? ;D) Next time buddy!

Best!
Ben.

Ben,
it's 2 hours from the Peninsula to Healdsburg, where you are. Another 4 hours to Mendocino. That's 6 hours, or 12 roundtrip, plus two for lunch, gas, etc.

I was planning on a morning drive, 2-3 hours max. I can meet up at FoSF and go North with you guys for an hour. Then I will have to turn back.

Rgds,

Art mentioned Mendocino... One of my favourite places on this earth. It's a real trip, you feel like you've been transported back in time 50 years, no joke. It's one of the most amazing and romantic places in existance. Right up there with the Carmel Highlands.

I know the MacCallum House in Mendocino, but I think they are dinner-only. We'll have to find a good lunch spot (anyone know one off the top of their head? I will ask a buddy of mine for a recomendation.)

The drive up 1 is just EPIC! It should be absolutely wild with a possee of F-cars!

It's about a 4 hour drive up, if we leave at 8 we can have lunch in Mendocino around noon, then we can come back down 128 through Healdsburg, maybe hop over to the Napa Valley and visit Vincent for a while, then have dinner either in Napa or Sonoma valleys (both have outstanding resturants.)

As we start our journey, we go through 15 miles of the most amazing redwoods I have EVER seen. (oh, and all 3+ hours of 128 is about the best road I have ever driven, tight, banked, smoooth, and nearly devoid of traffic.)

This would be one for the record books! 1 is almost all twisties and a view to die for, but there are a few places where one can hit 120+.

One last argument for the all-day trek: (I've gotta find this spa one of these days)

Tom,

Very good point. I tried to meet up with someone @ 35 & 92 last saturday morning at 9am - what a mess. I went to 92 & Canada instead, and took 84 to Skyline.

You might want to reconsider being anywhere near HMB with all people driving to the pumpkin patches....the traffic can be miserable. Tom

Tony,

Just tell her you're out indulging yourself. Come back with flowers, and she'll never bother you about it again!

Faisal: great shots. Looks like you guys had a hell of a time! I remember you mentioning this trip in vivid detail, never saw the pics.

This summer, a friend and I drove down from Portland to San Francisco, taking the scenic route. Did the drive in an Esprit V8. We were stopped by cops 4 times, but that's another story. It was breathtakingly beautiful, no doubt. Incredible scenery, amazing roads, the big trees you can drive through, lakes, forests, seashore, national parks, you name it. I am really glad I did it, but I am not doing that one again for a long time...if you haven't done it once, I highly recommend you do it.

fwiw: since I am in Saratoga, a drive on skyline dropping into Saratoga or LG to finish would be ideal. If it's real early I could do a northern drive, but hard to consider north of the GG - the wife acceptance factor. I need to be back early.

Kuzi,

Got your message - will respond soon. Sorry about that, was gone til late last night.

I'm down for this weekend, however I think we should avoid the page mill idea simply because the roads aren't up to par. I do like the idea of running skyline (did it this past saturday morning), as most of the southern parts of the road are brand new. Of course, I dropped off into Saratoga when I ended.

Art's idea of going north is definetly a good one - it's far more peaceful (less idiots), equally scenic, and most importantly: different.

Also - I dig Kuzi's idea of a large, possibly overnight, drive out of state. That one might require some serious planning, and input from Oregon people since I have no idea what their weather is like, routes, etc.

I'm around. You guys figure out the route, and if it's not too early on Sunday, I'll be there.

OK guys, let's do the brunch thing this weekend. Sunday ok? Kuzi, you're welcome to ride with me.

We just need to decide on a route. I am happy to do the drive in this area and brunch at HMB, or go north. Art, can you make it down this way?

Hello Dan,

Sounds like a great idea. I would like to propose a drive up Page Mill to Skyline. Skyline to 92. 92 to HMB. Then brunch at the fancy place in HMB.

Dan:

I'm around this weekend, and the weather is supposed to be good. What about Sunday am, a North drive, say highway 1 to Mendicino? Any takers?

Kuzi,

I was geared up to come again two weeks ago, but the people I need to meet are going to be down here halloween weekend, so then I don't need to come for a little while longer.

I'm open to a longer drive if others are - I think it'd be good fun. Maybe there's a long weekend?

Guys,

All this talk of meets and whatnot, let's go for it again. I figure we should get something in while the skies are clear (rain this year?) and before it starts to get cold (of course, below 60 is freezing :-) ).

Thoughts? I think our drives might need to get a bit longer, with an early-out option kind of like what we had last time. Perhaps a morning meet, that ends with lunch, and then those who are interested can press on for the rest of the day.

Also, Art is conspicuously absent.
