wow - i didn't realize it was that restrictive. i kinda assumed you had "access" for a year (or some substantial portion thereof). $20K per race is real money, and not being able to use it otherwise seems like a bummer.

i agree with you james - pick up a nice inexpensive track car and enjoy the heck out of it.

Matt
IMHO there are a lot of people sniffing glue these days. NYT 360 spyders are down to 175, coupes at 145, Barchetta's 290. Nice track cars are a lot less. Many are not seeing where things are and where they may be going. I bet you can have a lot more days of fun racing for a lot less than that.
Best

Doody...I read about the Maser series in the Forza. I can't believe what I read! It costs 120,000 (appx $130,000) for a 7 race season. It does not include the costs for mechanical or cosmetic damage. You do NOT have any ownership of the car. Yeah...great....nice lunches and pampering for your wife...but at $20,000/weekend.
I will be very suprised if the series makes it to next season.
And to top it off.....since you do not own the car...and the dealers ALWAYS keep the cars during non-race times....you can not use it for club events or similiar type events.

i know FSpA announced the maserati challenge (or whatever they're calling) upcoming setup, and it doesn't involve buying a car. you basically work with your dealer and you rent a car, crew, etc. it was something like $150K or $200K a year (i really don't recall - sorry) and included some nice stuff, like backup car accessibility.

my understanding is that the ferrari challenge series has been decimated of late. i know i heard noises that people were hoping they'd reconfigure it like the maserati stuff.

do folks think it'd be a more desirable setup? you wouldn't own the car, but you'd in theory get more and better support, etc.

What is the current market value of a 360 Challenge? Does anyone have examples of recent sales? There are several for sale in Melbourne at the moment; but the prices seem more than a little optimistic.

I managed Challenge race cars from '94 to '00. In 2000 the costs were roughly an average of $250,000 for the car, new, prepped and fit to driver, really, really race ready. The season, with testing, lots of testing, minor damage to cosmetics, typical mechanical maintenance cost about $250,000. Your actual mileage may vary, but that's what I told customers to budget, so they'd be prepared during the season for some large repair orders coming their way.

Yes, of course you can do it for less, this also included a top line hospitality coach/lounge and other amenities.

Europe seems to be a little cheaper! The mechanic of my official dealer told me that one season with the Ferrari challenge would cost roughly 500.000 DM which would be around 250.000 Euro these days. This included spare parts and I think its far enough for one season. With this money you could easily buy two new 360 Modena street cars here in Germany. So the challenge series is clearly something for millionaires and people who can bring a generous sponsor (Keep in mind that this is the amount of money for several races of fun, not for several years!).

Jon , thanks a lot for the info !! Its really expensive over there ! Here in France it costs around 30 000 $ per year without the car of course .
Do you still have your 355 C ? If yes , when do you use it when not attending Ferrari club events ?

Thanks .

Bummer Davind,

those nice curves....oh wait, you are going to Cancun, there is plenty of those out there as well! :-O

Might I suggest to rent a Jeep and drive yourself to Chichinitza (or however the **** you spell that). Great day trip and great site to visit. Can be found by car yourself.

FCA is having some track time between heats at the challenge race at Sears 3/7-9/03.
I'm taking my 355F1, and a friend is taking his F40. Ferrari SF said they will have an Enzo there on Sunday. Should be fun, unfortunatly I'm leaving for Cancun early sunday, so I may not get to see the Enzo.

Andrew,

Including car it's about 300-350K but this is a bare bones minimum with no crash damage. For a breakdown of costs see the thread below.

Eli,

By comparison, Lime Rock is a better place to view a race because of the beauty of the area, and also because LRP is a road course.
Homestead is an oval.

Please keep me posted if you plan on coming to SoFla!

Eli,

I highly suggest you attend the Lime Rock event. Besides the races, there's plenty to enjoy in the Berkshires.

I've looked on the Ferrari.com Challenge page and cannot find the 2003 US schedule. Does anyone know where I might find it?

I've been to the Ferrari Challenge at Road Atlanta and Virginia International Raceway. My favorites are the Ferrari Vintage races...usually many significant historic cars present.

I'm looking to be at the Ferrari Challenge at Lime Rock this year. The schedule for this year is cut way back from previous years...

I see then every year at the USGP in Indy. Great to watch race and you can get "up close" in the pit area.

Eli,

I used to go to Lime Rock to watch the Challenge Series. I really enjoyed it. They also had Ferrari vintage type races which included Ferrari race cars which were even more enjoyable.

The paddocks, parking lots are full of Ferraris.
Very fun overall experience.
