I plan to close the PayPal account this weekend, so if you would still like to contribute, please do so.

The response has been amazing. We have close to $3,200, so we will be able to donate nearly $2,000 after we pay for the tribute ad.

I talked with Ted this morning and we should be good to go. We have a little more time to work on the ad than I thought.

The closing date for submitting the ad is July 26th, so we still have some time to finish it up. It will be in the November issue of FORZA which hits subscribers around August 26th and newstands around September 16th.

I am going to be closing the PayPal account next Saturday (July 12) so if you plan to contribute, please do so within the next few days or mail a check to me.

Also, we are still coming up flat on pics of Jens and Amar. Please help out if you can.

Thanks.

Ken,
My check is in the mail.

The Forza ad is a terrific idea and of course will be seen for many years to come.

We just lost a member of the Arizona FCA to old age. He was a terrific guy and a huge inspiration to me as a future Ferrari owner. He was a very genuine guy as well as one of the most enthusiastic member of the Tifosi I had ever met. Just months before his health made a turn for the worse he took delivery of his ultimate dream car an amazing F512M. He was only able to drive the car twice before confined to a bed for the last few months of his life. He entered it in our Concours last October and recieved the highest number of points with 99.5. As a tribute to him, the club named a best of show award at our annual "Concorso Arizona" after him. Just thought I would share.

Russ,
in theory you are right. If that person however has touched you you have become family as well and would like to part take in the grieving process.

If you had been there with the emotions I felt that day as a bystander you would understand:
I called the restaurant not knowing if it was one of them. My hopes were dim. Then they said someone cancelled the table, my hope got a little bigger. Then I called the hotel and they had all checked out and my hope was down again. I left a message on Jens answering machine to call me, called his cell and no answer. Wolfgang calls me that he is trying to call Jens and Amar on the cells and gets no answer as well. The hope gets down to almost 0 and then the dreadful post from Bart that all hope was lost.

I am grieving. I am shocked and I sent my contribution to the ad simply because I do not have an idea what else to do.

I talked to Jens on several occasions. He was a class act. If I would have known more Jens's before I left Germany I may have stayed there.

Amar I never talked to or chatted online. Although our paths have crosses very closely in Monaco a few weeks ago.

I guess my rambling about this is, this is my way of grieving with friend here. I am looking forward to the Forza tribute and will keep that issue dearly. As a reminder of two great guys as well as to remind to do tings differently.

Russ, you shouldn't of said anything at all. We got your point the first time. It's personal reasons why everyone wants or doesn't want to contribute. No reasons to make a big deal about it either way.

I am declining to contribute for a number of reasons chief among them that for me the proposed uses are empty gestures. A few points.
-If someone solicits money from me for a charity I do want an explanation and perhaps a few words in defense of the purpose.
-I sense that some have forgotten that this matter is about Jens and Amar and not so much about us. Something in a magazine and money to a family that probably does not need it may make us feel good but in my mind is neither noble nor timeless.
-Nothing has been said about the desires of the family as far as I can tell. When it comes to how these men are to be remembered it seems to me that the families desires are all important.

There will be nothing more from me on this.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed. We are now at $2,652.81 and still a few more checks coming in.

Russ, my comment about being pissed off if we did not raise a certain amount of money was basically a tongue in cheek way of saying that it would be a shame if we could not raise at least $1 per registered user on the board. After all, most people on this board must be very well of because they own Ferraris, right? (how ironic that people would not want to contribute because they think that two men who owned Ferraris must not need the donation).

I completely understand your position about what the money will be used for. But, for many of us, Forza is a magazine that we keep around long after we have read it cover to cover. A tribute to Jens and Amar is very appropriate in Forza because it is symbolic of their passion and their love for Ferrari. I see it as being the same as the collection of newspaper front pages that I collected after September 11th and the Columbia crash. It reminds us of friends that we have lost and how lucky we are to be here.

The money going to the family is not so much because they may need the money, but rather a gesture from friends of Jens and Amar that they will be missed. We could have sent flowers, but for a community of friends with a common passion, I think it is more powerful to think that we all came together and put the time and effort into raising some money for a nice tribute.

If the family needs the money, then they may use it for anything they wish. If not, then they (or we) can donate to charities that Jens and Amar may have favored. That was always my intent.

If anyone would prefer to give money to charity rather than have it go toward an tribute in Forza, then feel free to send me a check or contribute to PayPal and I will keep that money separate from the ad funds. Moot point really, because we have alrady raised enough money to pay for the ad, so all of the remaider is going to the family or charity.

I have not done a tally of how many individuals have conributed to the fund. But it is at least 100 with a few contributing twice. The response has been great.

I never met Jens or Amar and I dont own a Ferrari. Yet I still contributed as did many others. This is really about remembering lost friends - a guesture of respect. It also is a way of doing a little gut check so that we al remember that it could have happened to anyone of us - maybe not on a track, but because of a drunk driver or another tragic accident. Once in my younger years I was nearly killed while flying an airplane. I have lost a few friends in plane crashes, including a former co-worker who used to talk with me about our common interested in Ferraris. So, everyday I am thankful for how lucky I am to still be here, still have the opportunity to log in and see what the Tifosi are chatting about. We should all feel very lucky because there are so many with so much less.

Russ, I don't think you will be ostracized for your comments. I think the Forza tribute is good because it's not a one time magazine ad, but something that will remain in the collection of 10,000+ Ferrari enthusiasts forever.

It is my personal opinion that we have more than enough money now and no need to really push much more. Members of the board are getting with the family to determine how the rest of the money should be spent. I'll help where I can, but it's a FerrariChat.com users initiative organized by Ken. My contribution is only just as another FC user.

Each user determines whether they want to participate or not for their own reasons. No need to find out what those personal reasons are. If you're not one, then that's fine.

I agree with some of your points, but this is a way we can do "something". If we say "make a donation to xyz charity" I bet the turnout would be much lower due to pure procrastination.

I don't think we expect the families to really "use" or "need" the money, but it is a gesture from a broad, worldwide community.

It may not be a perfect solution, but it is better than sitting on our hands.

At the risk of my being ostracized in this forum, I question the purpose to which all this money is going to be used:
-What is the point of a "tribute" in a magazine to some individuals who are strangers to most of us. Such a tribute will make money for the magazine but will be of little note and soon forgotten once the issue is off the stands.
-If anything is left over it is to go to the family of a man who was wealthy enough to support and track a high end Ferrari.
-And the fact that someone will be "really pissed" if support doesn't reach a certain level is to me offensive to the memory and dignity the deceased men.
-To preserve the dignity of the occasion and honor the memory of the departed why does not someone who knew either of the men simply ask the families for the name of a charity to which a donation could be made in either of their names and make that information available to the rest of us..

Hey Everyone....

Sorry I have not updated the fund lately, but I had a busy weekend moving to my new place.

There are still a few checks that I have not recieved, but our total is.......

$2,536.86

I think with the checks that are still coming, we should come very close to $3,000.

Usernames may be doable, but usernames and location would probably make the back graound way too busy. We are going to have Jens and Amars pictures plus some words of remembrance, so if the background is too cluttered, it wont look good.

I think a half page ad would be awkward. I would like a full page ad, if not, then a 1/4 page.

I think in little text at the bottom there should be a note "...from the fc community" or "...from your friends at fc".

Otherwise it doesn't represent it's a community effort from us. Might as well put from the Porsche club or whatever. I do not want the full ferrarichat.com name on there though, unless someone has a good reason.

I think a simple tag line on the bottom that reads something like "From your friends at FerrariChat.com" would be fine. It is common to say somewhere on the ad who the message is from.

How about Grant drawing a picture of both of their cars and them? I don't know if this would be too much work, but I saw a picture of a sketch he did (I think of an Enzo without a top?) and it looked really great, and I think that he said it did not take him much time. Any thoughts?

Ditto with Bobd etc, but do what you all want. I would not use Fchat in the ad, I think it would be viewed wrongly.

I am of the opinion that perhaps a mention of ferrarichat.com (even if it is just the URL) would be bennificial to the Forza AD. It identifies the group that mourns the loss and will act as a source of new members to the community thereby strengthening our group as a whole. I do not wish to view this as a publicity stunt however I recognize the merits of letting the world know that we are out there.

I tend to agree with Ken. Didn't somebody suggest a simple wreath? I think it should be kept simple... doesn't need a lot of busy things in the background.

Personally I don't think the Italian flag is a good idea. None of them are Italians and having an Italian theme is inappropriate and might suggest otherwise. Just my opinion.

Jens profile pic with his 348 is great and we will use that. The only pic I have of Amar and his 360 is small and it may be hard to get a good resolution image of each man with his car, although I would like to make tht happen. I will let Rich work his creative magic and see what he can do with the pics.

I love the flag pole. We have pictures of the 348 and the 360 with and without Jens and Amar. Personally I would prefer a picture each of them with their respective cars. Just cars is too unpersonal.

We now have about $1,350 in donations and still many of the checks that people are sending have not arrived, so there is still more money on the way.

I talked with Rich Stephens yesterday about the content, so that is in work. It will have a pictures of Jens and Amar (from their profiles on various auto boards). It will also incorporate Jens typical sign off phrase.

I love Grant's design, but contrary to what some members of the board think, I believe we will have a copyright/trademark problem with the cavallino rampante. A fair use defense to copyright will not protect us and there are other reasons why I don't feel we should have any Ferrari logos in the ad (privately e-mail me if anybody wants to know my thoughts about this).

So, as a compromise to incorporate an Italian theme, I suggested to Rich that we have an Italian flag in the background of the image.

Also, there won't be any reference to FChat unless Rob says that is OK.

The ad will be done with the utmost class and respect. However, I still believe that a full page ad is a bit much and would prefer a 1/2 page ad and then dispense the left-over money to the families or charities.

I am always open to suggestions, but I will stand firm on the copyright/trademark issues.

We need to decide on what to put in the ad. We have enough money for the 1 page and more. I say we get the one page and the rest to a charity or scholarship fund.

I haven't seen any graphics but Grants yet, but I love his. How about a picture of Jens and Amar with their cars?

The support is great. There is still time to donate. We should have left over money to give to charity or the families after we pay for the ad.

Martin, I saw a picture of Amar the other day on the Europe site for FChat. Also, what is the level of contribution for the Forza ad?

Hi Izel,

PayPal seems to discriminate against people living in certain countries (and possibly with certain nationalities too). If you live in one of the countries on their "black list", you won't be able to register.

When I was in South Africa I was unable to register and likewise when I was based in Eastern Europe. For this reason I am no PayPal fan!

Sometimes the page stops loading and my country is not listed does it matter if i select somewhere else?
I don't know much about paypal.
