What do you think of the MSRP of 240K as quoted in this weeks autoweek? Do you think there's a market for this car at that price?

Although I would naturally mourn any drop in the prices of the 456, I must however still send my warmest welcome to the addition of even more F-chat friends to the 456 club.

Cheers to all. :-)

This comment is really historically very in line to many debuts of Pininfarina cars.

It's funny how almost 100% of them are borne out in time as classics. I read a review once where someone commented on PF making the newest Ferrari look dated and stodgy - which one? - the 275 GTB.

I think it was Scaglietti who remarked many were in terror every time a new Pininfarina design came out not knowing how the public would react.

Can't wait to see it as it looks to be a lithe 456.

I think it looks great. Why everyone knocks the BMWs for looking a bit distinctive is beyond me. The one thing the Europeans have over the Japanese (since it isn't tech or power) is style. Sorry but I don't want to see a Ferrari looking like a 300z/RX8 or a BMW looking like a Lexus.

I think the sketches look fantastic & I believe Ferrari is moving in a good direction w/ their new vehicles compared to some of the other car companies right now.

Chris, I'll call you to pick a date. Brian told me about the "ride" he had in your car!! Doody, I'm speculating that the Maranello replacement would happen in 2005 and the 360 replacement in 2006. I could be wrong though. Faisal Khan, I believe the 575M Maranello replacement will remain as a two seater.

Trend is towards front-mid-engined cars...engine in front, but set far enough back to give excellent weight distribution. Like the SLR, 575, etc. I can't imagine a rear-engined 4-seater. That would be a packaging nightmare.

Hope the 575 replacement is a 12 cyl. mid engine car

some might argue that the whole mid-12 thing was just an adolescent phase for the company :-). why do you want to see them go back to mids?

do we have a guesstimated date yet on the Maranello replacement?

456 replacement fall 2004 ??
360 replacement fall 2005 ??
575 replacement fall 2006 ??

doody.

i'd bet money that these are early concept drawings; as opposed to artistic renderings of the final product. just like the early concept drawings of other models, the final product will be notably different, more balanced, and carefully refined.

hmmmmm - maybe they'll have an AWD version with plenty of rear leg room and i can ditch all this BS benz and audi crap i'm dealing with :-) :-) :-).

doody.

My first thought was the front looked like a callaway corvette. It'll be very interesting to see the final product.

Andre,
very well put. Agree 100%. The side profile is even more quirky than a Marcos, it's almost in Bristol territory.

I hope it doesn't really look like this. They meshed the concave side of an early vette with the front of a Lotus Elise. Bleah.

At least the 456 prices will plummet and afford me the chance to buy one :-)

I don't think you're going against the grain at all, Jim. I thought the 456 was the best looking Ferrari since the 365 GTB/4, and any replacement was bound to be a disappointment compared to that one. I don't despise this design as much as BMW's new ugly sedan philosophy, but the 360, 550 and Enzo didn't grab me immediately like a 456 or a 355 did.

As Giorgio Guigiaro said,"Cars are like women. There is no such thing as an ugly woman, it's just that some are more beautiful than others...", but I bet he didn't anticipate the new BMW 7-series or the upcoming 5-series for that matter. This sketch seems to be wrong proportion-wise to me. Maybe it'll work out like the first-generation Viper or the new TVRs, but the "Bergman" side shapes seems a bit gimmicky and forced to me, like the "ventiports" on a new Buick, or the gills on the front fenders of a 550. The shape should stand on its own and not have to resort to tacky design cues like a 1974 Mustang II.

My two cents (adjusted for inflation).

It looks fantastic, the 456 prices will drop like a stone, and now I can look at a slightly used 456 instead of a really used 330 2+2 for about the same price. I can't wait.

Yes the Bergman style headlights and doors will give the car a perfect and nostalgic look.

It reminds me of the Alfa Brerra ( sp? ). If it looks anything like the Bergmann car it will be fantastic, certainly the prettiest car I have ever seen.

Recent rumor has it:

1. Sketches of the car will be released this Tuesday, July 8.

2. The debut of the actual car will be at the Detroit Auto show next January.

3. The car has an extremely long hood line and concave sides that are inspired by the "Bergman" 375 MM Speciale (0456 AM).

4. Tail lights are similar to those of the Enzo, with their upper edges exposed.

5. Engine will be a reworked 575M powerplant producing 540bhp.

The potential 460 was discussed here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/251280/228436.html

Two great things about this: first, hopefully we'll have another great looking Fcar to discuss, and second, the 456 pricing ought to drop significantly over the next few years. Since I'll be in the market for a 12 by then, I'm looking forward to the 40-50K 456 :-)
