Joeys burnt 355 is actaully still around. Someone rebuilt it w/ a salvage title. That fire happened about 5 mins from my house. The story is that the fuel attendant was the one who spilled the fuel. He bought a 996TT silver soon after and now has a 360 silver 6speed. Ill ask him the real story if I see him soon. We share a few common friends (he actually lives down the street from me) but I dont really know him well.
Benedict your brothers viper burned up? I had a '98 Hennessey Venom 600 and the cats in the sidesills would get so hot that the bottom of my shoes would melt and leave large black streaks of rubber on them when I got out after running her hard. I finally test pipes put in. I got sick of feeling like a roasting turkey.

Madmaxx, what you said about the Viper caught my attention. This past summer my brother's Viper
overheated and in seconds was engulfed in flames.
Luckily he escaped without injury but the car was a total loss. The cop told him he had seen other Vipers just burst into flames. Do I smell a class action suit?

9 gallon exotic rule!!!!! NEVER fill your exotic with more than 9 gallons. You dont need it unless your racing! And theres less fuel for less inertial mass. and its safer.

Hey, I've had a couple incidents where the pump did not stop pumping and flowed over, lucky I caught it in time before a pond formed, this was in Florida, why do I have bad luck in Florida?

Gee, I never use the handle lock, just being afraid to mess up my hard earned shine. Don't really think about fire. Now I will not even use full flow! Sorry about your car, but glad you weren't hurt. The car can be replaced. (P.S.-As for a lawsuit, it will be a tough case to prove liability, and the station owner (and insurance co) has probably already checked out the pump for defective mechanism...the sad part is, they won't tell you if it was working incorrectly...probably just fix it under cover of darkness)

I didn't leave the car, I wasn't staring at the gas pump either. I was just looking away and boom everything goes up in flames.

Two problems with the 355, with respect to filling the tank. First, there is a factory recall to the fuel lines. They can abrade and leak, potentially increasing the risk of a bad engine bay fire. Second, the exhaust manifold is RIGHT THERE. The overflow hole for the gas cap dumps the gas right in front of the left rear wheel. With enough pressure and fumes, it's not inconceivable that something would be ignited by the hot hot hot exhaust header.

Also, the way the fueling system on the 355 is designed, it's virtually impossible to set the pump nozzle to full "open", whether you hold the handle or try to use the handle lock. I rotate the nozzle 20 or 30 degrees to allow the nozzle to "open" completely. I try never to "top off" the tank, and I never leave the car while the gas pump is still running. Too afraid of being "Kramer'ed".

vty,

Man, that car looks bad. The fire damage on mycar is in the right quarter only. There is damage on the engine bay also but mostly from water.

Here is a thread about it.

quote:

Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer narrowly escaped serious injury when his Ferrari convertible caught fire at a gas station not too far from his Boston-area home. Kramer sustained the most serious burns to his arm and hand as he shielded his face from the flames after a leak in the gas tank hose caused the fuel to ignite. He is being given 2 weeks to recover (the Ferrari won't) and the band will be back on the road mid-August. Their timely tour break was already scheduled after an accident on stage injuring frontman Steven Tyler.

Seyhan,
This is most unfortunate. Hopefully, the car has comprehensive fire insurance. We live and we learn - just echoing Paul's thoughts... I always try to pump first then walk away... hindsight is 20:20... sorry for your loss.

Madturk can not be Yaoshi, since Madturk signed in 6/2003 and not 9/2003.

Sorry to hear that.
If the time comes keep me in mind, maybe I can help you get a new ride.
Most important is you or anybody else was not hurt.

I don't know why but when I fill up the attendants always have a hard time with the 355. It's not their fault the lever on the nozzle never stays down, it just pops up like the tank is full even when its not. It's really weird.

Real sorry about the car, that's just a crazy story. Were people crying with you?

Hey, MadTurk.......is this really you./???? See the thread TC posted..........I mean is this really you that that idiot was looking for, or is a wierd coincidence that you just joined the board? Very sorry to hear about your car.........is there any recourse against the gas station....faulty pumps...etc. I hate to say it, but if you were burned up, there'd be multi million dollar lawsuits saying how their safty nozzels failed........you should get something for your car.......good luck

Damn, sorry to hear that happened :-( I hope there wasn't toooo much damage to the car and sounds like you hopefully weren't hurt. I've seen stories on the news about pump fires caused by static electricity and it's pretty scary thinking how much flamable fumes are around the area every time you pump gas. Either way it's good that you didn't get hurt that's the most important thing, but such a sad situation with the car though :-(.

Yesterday I got to drive my car for the last time. I took it on 575 and drove it pretty hard I guess. Then I got off at exit 8/Town Lake parkway where I live. I thought before I go home get gas so I do not have to later. I pull over to QT ( mistake I know, I know ) pump number 6. There I am waiting for it to be full, I look around and see that the pump did not stop and , gas is everywhere, it's still on ( The stupid pump did not stop when the tank got full )By the time I got the pump out of the car it was to late. By then gas got onto the engine bay and immediatly after it was on fire. ( hot engine and gas not a very good combo, I learned it first hand ) I mean flames on top of the car. I ran inside grabbed the fire extinguisher and put the fire out only for it to start again and again until the fire dept. showed and floded the car. I was very lucky it didn't blow. Because, there it is full tank, the cap was off and fire all over. So right now I feel like very very lucky person.
One last word, do not trust the pump to stop.
I will post pictures later.
