Yes, and you can also slide a piece of pipe over the T bar that you find in the socket set to increase torque.

thanks for all the info, As I am a Brit, am I correct in thinking a breaker bar is just a big bar that attaches to a socket bar ? |

philip -- Gerrit V. posted a good shot of the (disassembled) half-shaft components here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/256120/256533.html Even though it can be a b!tch to unbolt the half-shaft assembly from the drivetrain, I'd still say it's better in the long-run than trying to do the work on the car -- 1) so you can do the garter clamp work on the bench, and 2) unless your half-shafts were recently serviced, the other CV joint on the half-shaft could probably use a re-grease and fresh garter too. Not something you'd need to do every 30K miles/5 years absolutely religiously, but maybe every 2nd or 3rd major isn't an unreasonable service interval IMO. Good luck with the fix... |

I just changed one on my 328. The bolts on the outside joint get all the road spray and so they tend to be rusted up, the inner ones are sheltered and in fact get a bit of oil spray so not bad to get out. I had to cut off the outer ones by slicing through the nuts with a Dremel. The nuts fit tight against a step on the back face of the flange to serve as an anti-rotation, unfortunately if they are very tight the corners of the nuts round off and you have to try and get onto them with an open ended wrench to countertorque. Get a good quality hex tool that fits in a socket and a long extension or two to get into the inner ones. Put the parking brake on to help stop the shaft rotating when you undo them, put it into 5th gear to give even more holding power. They are very tight !!!! The boots themselves are pretty cheap I got mine through Ferrari UK for about $15 each, you will need to get the two clips and probably some new nuts and maybe some bolts too. Good luck. |
