I'm wondering if the two thicknesses differ whether B&B or Valeo? And, yes, I thought those splines looked familiar. I think that's the basis of my 'tiny' comment, as it looks like a miniature Corvette clutch. |

Ahah, I've just looked at a pressure plate that recently came out of a '77 308 & it's marked: 'TYPE 9/9 1/2 DS' John Wise sent me a pix of his pressure plate. His PP is marked: 'TYPE 9 - 9-1/2' The PP's OD is 9.5". These numbers make sense as the range of friction disc diameters the PP works with, & the DS indicates a diaphram spring. The friction disc from the '77 308 is stamped 57827. I have reason to slightly distrust this disc as the PP was mounted with thin washers between it & the flywheel. There's an old thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/256120/8258.html That indicates that a number of 308 clutch kits were sold with clutch discs that were too thick. It mentions shimming the PP off of the flywheel as a way of making them useable. I'm wondering if this disc was one of those over-thick ones. Hmm, anyone know the thickness and or a P/N of a Daytona friction disc? Could the 'thick' ones have been Datona discs? Pure spec, could the '3' and '7's that are different between the 2 numbers be the thickness of the friction rings in mm? SPLINES ------- BTW, if you're looking for an alignment tool, the friction disc splines have 10 teeth & are 1-1/8" diameter. Lots of Chevvys used a 1-1/8" 10T spline. Hmm, wonder if Chevvy ever used a 9" disc of the right thickness? Boy would that work out nice! |

Verell: I have a non-Ferrari 308 clutch from George Evans. The disc has no identifying marks. Looks like ordinary disc (altho tiny!) w/orange center springs. PP has stamped into the cover: "Borg & Beck", "England", and "TYPE 9/9 1/2 D.S." The box has a brand name of "Emmebi", with English, French, and Italian writing. The tag on the box reads: "RIF KR9300". |

Well, Here's what I've been able to find out about the relationship between AP & Borg&Beck. They're the same company: Automotive Products UK gets US investment ----------------------------------------- Automotive Products UK (formerly AP Borg & Beck) has been bought by a private US-based investment group. The 24 million turnover company is to be rebranded as Automotive Products Driveline Technology and will continue to manufacture clutch systems at its Leamington Spa plant. Managing director Andrew Richardson led the buyout from the UK/Spanish AP group and said he was looking forward to expanding in the clutch and drum brake OE and aftermarket sectors, taking advantage of the new owners investment and experience in the automotive sector. See: www.APDriveline.com Another web site indicated that early in it's 70+year life, when it only sold clutches, the company was known as "Borg & Beck Automotive Products". Now the tail is waggin the dawg! Also, SACHS in the US now sells Borg&Beck clutches. They have an on-line catalog, but it doesn't list 308s: http://www.sachsna.com/

Verell I have spoken to Borg & Beck (who are now part of the Delphi Group), in their opinion 53823 is the disc adaptor retainer plate and 9/91/2 DS is the manufacture date and DS = Diaphragm Plate. As far as I can rememder Ferrari had these parts made by Borg & Beck under licence to a company called Automotive Products, who no longer trade in the UK, but they maybe worth a search from your end. Sorry can't help more than that. MW |
