Lol. That certainly is true of most piston twins.

Turboprop twins have plenty of performance available and should have a better safety record, but they don’t mainly because of pilot error / poor training / lack of currency.

It’s a little known fact that if you have an engine failure in a turboprop you’re more likely to die if you’re in a twin than in a single.
And then consider that in a twin you’re twice as likely to have a failure in the first place…

Yes but I'd imagine your RFDS single turboprops are well-maintained and not spared on cash -I'd fly with you .

Yep. If it happens in a critical phase of flight (takeoff being the most critical) it must be handled quickly and correctly.

If not the consequences are usually severe.

By contrast an engine failure in a single only gives you one option - find somewhere to put it down safely.
In the PC12 the performance is such that from about 800 ft AGL you can execute a turnaround and land back on the runway you started from, and from cruise altitude (25000ft) you will glide more than 100km in any direction.

If you can’t find somewhere to put it down safely within a 100km radius you’re not trying.

Very true, but I’d fly in a modern piston single no worries at all.
Everything has multiple redundancy (except the actual engine, of course) and the avionics and systems are light years ahead of where they used to be.

The limiting factor for me would be the pilot. I wouldn’t get in if I wasn’t absolutely sure about their ability.
And of course being sensible about the weather, terrain, night time etc.

    Interesting pic.
So that’s a twin turboprop, and the one prop you can see has been feathered (as it would be after an engine failure) yet they still managed to put it in the drink even though presumably one engine was still going.

Pure speculation of course. It could have had a double failure due fuel exhaustion / contamination etc.

During the pilot strike in the early 90s?

My wife who was an elite scuba diver master /teacher booked a holiday course in Cairns before the strike.

Anyway, she bused it up to Cairns QLD , did the holiday course on the reef and the strike was broken by Hawke and she flew back to Melbourne on a RAAF Hercules!

The saying goes 'lose the engine in a single you are looking for a place to land. Lose one in a twin and you are looking for a place to crash'

Back in the late 70's/early 80's i lost a couple of friends in twin engine crashes - one here and one in US. Both lost an engine on climb out and the pilot made the decision to return to the airport. However, both failed to gain sufficient altitude before commencing the turn.
