A friend wants to become a Stock broker

I'm not in the game but on good terms with my broker

It seems there is no "absolute" background, obviously you need to be bright and have good inter-personal skills

They do courses etc and issue certs and diplomas

A lot of folk get in via agencies in London to be trainees at places like Natwest securities or any of the big brokers, they all have their own criteria and schemes
once you have say, a Certificate in Securities, they put you forward to register at the FSA, initially as a trainee and later as fully qualified. If you want to get into say derivatives, there is another specialised raft of qualifications.

Of course its all London focussed, no huge opportunities in Warwick for example

Yes, a finance degree would be useful.

N.B. there are loads of stockbrokers in all areas but as per much of finance the main monies are to be made in London until you are established.

Most importantly you have to be prepared to sell your soul to the devil i.e. love money more than anything else to do well. So tell him to steer clear unless he is tough enough to do this or genuinely interested / has a flair in how the financial markets work in stock trading. From experience most of the guys had to work til 2 in the morning & went grey / bald prematurely / became closet alcoholics / get divorced for ignoring their wives / were complete *******s when I was there.

Ideally he should get some internmentship / time out from studies in an appropriate company while studying to see if he likes it / help him be one step ahead of the rest when the time comes for permanent employment.

If you have a genuine flair great, otherwise loads of other options in how to do well in life.

 

Tell him he is probably better off looking into Trading (try some of the Investment Banks)
Also from what I have seen, the degree you have is irrelevant, but the grade is.
