Curious as i have a bottle of this Z-2 PRO Show Car Polish for Clear Coated Car Finishes came with kit
Hey Goth, I'm no painter but I believe that the early 355's used Glasurit as we all know.... I was told by a friend of mine that runs a body shop to NEVER buff it (Glasurit) agressively with a machine because it is single stage with no clear and will dull...Airplanes are of course the same way.... I tried this on a tiny spot under the nose of my car "out of sight" and he was correct!!!!! Have you heard of this before?
I try and not put out answers when I'm not sure but... I think it may depend on what color you have. My car (Red - 1995) does not have a clear coat on it.
This may be true..... I thought all modern glasurits used a clear coat.... I guess we need to hear from an expert on this.......
If you get color on your micro fiber when you polish = no clear coat. No color = clear coat. Mine 1998 = no color.
Sorry, not 100% true. It depends on what you use with the micro fiber. Neither of my 928's have a clear coat and "normal" polshing I see no color in my micro fiber (black & brown). Most "clearcoat safe" polishes are so weak and non abrasive that unless you are using a power D/A or buffer, you will not see color. I cannot remember the last time I saw a non-clearcoat safe product on a store shelf. I've actually used rubbing compound on one of my 928's and did not see any color when used by hand. When I break out the D/A, I start to see paint on my pads. Has nothing to do with year either. My friends 2006 black Lexus has no clear. I've also heard Ferrari uses a very soft paint so I guess it's possible to pull some paint off with some very weak polishes, but I seriousally doubt they are that soft. 1997 Black 355 - no clear. So I'll see next week just how this paint reacts to various polishes. I'll take pics and post back. So, if you see paint on your pad, no clear. If you do not see paint, 50/50 either way
I always assumed all modern cars (90's and newer) had a clear coat... Certainly would have expected that all Ferraris of that time would have one!
Goth, Interesting enough, I tried the same thing on the PPG painted 98 spider and it positively has clear. My friends 95 as well as my 95 do not have clear.... Food for thought The saga continues.........
I was just involved with a good discussion about this. My friends red 1996 911 smacked a deer pretty good. The OEM paint is single stage (no clear) and he had a choice to respray with a two stage (base / clear).
Good point. My 1995 F355 built in Nov. 1994 appears not to have clear coat. Whilst cleaning with Meguiar's Mirror Glaze and orbital buffer, a little yellow paint came off on cotton pad in some spots, mostly horizontal surface. Also I was told by a painter who also has a '95 355 spider that it's single stage. However, after cleaning, I used Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0, applied and polished by hand. After about half hour, I buffed with polisher. Result is a glass smooth wet look. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Is it hard to repaint a car single stage these days? Most clears today just show a lot of scratches and swirl marks and don't seem as easy to buff out for a show shine. Conscom, your car looks fantastic!
